The Daniel S. Bezanson Scholarship was endowed by Miss Anne Bezanson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in memory of her brother, the late Mr. Daniel S. Bezanson, is to be awarded annually to a student entering the fourth year with a major in economics, sociology, history or political science. Selection is made by the Scholarship Committee from recommendations received from the departments concerned and is based on scholarship and need.

The David and Charlotte Haley Mathematics Scholarship. This scholarship honours the memory of Dr. K.D.C. Haley and his wife Charlotte. Dr. Haley was a member of the Mathematics Department from 1947 until 1980, and Head of the Department for most of that period. He had an outstanding reputation as a teacher and champion of student rights. The scholarships are awarded to mathematics majors on the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

David and Ruth Anne (Morse) Nicholson Bursary

Bursary | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Pure and Applied Science, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry

Established in 2020 by alumni David and Ruth Anne (Morse) Nicholson, this bursary is available to students majoring in Biology, Business, or Chemistry in recognition of financial need. The bursary will be granted to a student in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science and the F.C. Manning School of Business in alternating years. Each bursary will be valued annually based on investment returns and the recommendation of the Board of Governors’ Investment Committee.

Ruth Anne Morse, daughter of professor Dr. Norman Morse (’40,’42), met David Nicholson at Acadia while she was studying science and he, business. David received a Bachelor of Commerce in 1965 and Ruth Anne a Bachelor of Science in 1966. After their marriage in the Acadia Chapel in 1967, they resided in Ontario, David’s home province, where David continued his studies and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1968. Having raised their family and operated a business for thirty years in Ontario, they retired to Nova Scotia in 2000. With her long-standing family ties and their fond memories and appreciation of the unique Acadia environment, Ruth Anne and David wish to give back to the university in the form of this bursary.

David Cartwright and Cyril Coldwell Memorial Award

The David Cartwright and Cyril Coldwell Memorial Award is provided annually through the generosity of the International Union of Game Biologists XXI Congress, to a student completing research in the field of sustainable use of wildlife. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of the quality and importance of the proposed research as well as their enthusiasm, commitment and broad abilities in wildlife management. The award is dedicated to the memory of David Cartwright and Cyril Coldwell, two unselfish mentors who nurtured many budding wildlife biologists.

David Hastings Hockey Award

Award

Established in 2019 by David and Patricia Hastings, this award recognizes a member of the Axemen varsity hockey team, preferably a goaltender.

David Hastings graduated from Acadia in 1974 with a BBA and had a career in the oil and gas industry for 35 years as a senior manager and is a FCPA, FCMA and CPFA. A longtime member of Acadia’s Board of Governors and Business School Advisory Board, David’s other Acadia commitment was as goaltender of the Axemen (70-74) before being drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers. He is President of the Class of 1974 and a Hockey Honour Roll inductee in 2008.

David Ritcey and Judith A. Dunbar Bursary

Bursary

The David Ritcey and Judith A. Dunbar Bursary, established in 2018 by David Ritcey (BA Political Science, Acadia 1974); MPA Public Administration, University of Victoria 1976) and Judith Dunbar (B. Ed., University of Victoria 1979; M. Ed., York University 1992), will be funded through an estate gift. David and Judy met and married at Acadia University. They worked in Saskatchewan, Toronto, Miami Beach, with David's IBM assignments in Melbourne Australia, Dusseldorf Germany, and Johannesburg South Africa, before retiring to Charleston, South Carolina.

This Bursary is granted on a renewable basis to students who are the first in their immediate family to attend university and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to single parents or Indigenous students. David and Judy intend to support and encourage students who come from socially/economically challenged backgrounds so that they have full opportunity to secure post-secondary education.

The Davis Scholar-Bursary is awarded annually to an entering student on the basis of financial need and academic performance. Awards will be given to well-rounded students from Nova Scotia, with preference given to students from western Nova Scotia.

The scholar-bursary has been funded in memory of Samuel Bancroft Davis (BA Acadia 1930) and his wife Orris Mary Fillmore (Class of 1938 Acadia). “Banny”, born in Yarmouth, and Orris, originally from Moncton, were both devoted supporters of Acadia University.

The Deane (McCain) and Bill Westaway Bursary is available to a mature student with preference given to a single parent registered in the faculty of Pure and Applied Science. Deans' List Scholarships

Scholarship

Deans' List Scholarships are annually provided for Deans' Scholars who do not already receive full funding from government or other public or private agencies and subject to a ceiling set from time to time by the Scholarship, Prizes and Awards Committee. A minimum amount of funding per scholar is not, however, guaranteed, since the funds available vary from year to year. Each student receiving scholarship support is advised in writing from the Office of Admissions and Student Assistance.

Deeneh Foundation Economics Award

Established in 2023 by Nadine and Doug Allen (’87), the Deeneh Foundation Economics Award recognizes a returning student from Nova Scotia enrolled in the BA Economics program who may have financial need and be from Nova Scotia, preferably Halifax.

Originally from Windsor, NS, Doug Allen (’87) established himself as a business leader in Alberta after his time at Acadia. He completed his CPA CA designation in 1989 and his MBA at the University of Alberta in 2002. He held executive level positions with Syncrude Canada Ltd, the Guthrie Group of Companies and the Mikisew Group of Companies. He has served on the Board of Directors for several charities and non-profits. Nadine, from Halifax, started her career in banking and is a financial advisor with Raymond James Ltd. Together they have founded the Deeneh Foundation which recognizes their family roots and values with its mission and crest.

Awarded annually to a returning student from Nova Scotia enrolled in the Manning School of Business Administration, the Deeneh Foundation Leadership in Business Award recognizes exceptional promise and future leadership in the business community. The successful recipient will demonstrate financial need and preference will be given to suitable candidates from Windsor, NS.

The award was established in 2021 through the generosity of Doug (’87) and Nadine Allen. Originally from Windsor, NS, Doug established himself as a business leader in Alberta after his time at Acadia. Dennis H. Covill Scholar-Bursary

Scholar-Bursary | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science

The Dennis H. Covill Scholar-Bursary is awarded on a renewable basis to entering or returning students in the Faculty of Science (Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology, Mathematics & Statistics, Nutrition & Dietetics, or Physics) with preference given to students in Environmental Science or having a large component of their studies in this area. The DeWolfe Memorial Bursary ($215) was endowed in 1991 by John B. DeWolfe (B.A. Acadia, '46; LL.B. Dalhousie, '49) in memory of family members who were long associated with Acadia: Henry Todd DeWolfe (B.A. Acadia, 1899; D.D., 1909; LL.D., 1925); Rev. Herbert Eaton DeWolfe (B.A. Acadia, 1914); Prof. Edgar Lawrence DeWolfe (B.A. Acadia, 1924; B.E., N.S. Tech., 1933). The bursary is available to a needy student in an Arts program.

Diefenbaker Medals and Awards for Debating

Award

The Diefenbaker Medals and Awards for Debating. The late Honourable John G. Diefenbaker made a substantial gift to the University to provide a gold medal and a silver medal to the first and second place debaters to be chosen by the University Debating Committee. The Board of Governors has also approved an award of $900 to go with the gold medal, $600 with the silver medal, and $250 each to the two runners up.

Donald G. Stairs Athletic Award

Award | Eligibility: Athletics, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island

Established in 2020 by the Stairs family to honour their father. To be awarded to a returning varsity men’s hockey player who exemplifies leadership qualities on their respective team and in the community, as well as excelling in perseverance, dedication, and sportsmanship. Preference shall be given to a hockey athlete from Atlantic Canada. The recipients shall be in good academic standing and shall be chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the head coach of the men’s hockey program.

This award honours Donald G. Stairs (‘44) who played for the varsity hockey Axemen, as well as the Acadia varsity men’s rugby team. Don was a two-time winner of the Orley Bligh Trophy during his four year varsity career, plus later in life he was made an Acadia Hockey Honour Roll inductee.

Established anonymously in 2018, the award is in honour of Don Callbeck '51, member of the hockey Axemen from 1949 to 1951. Donna Conrad Leadership Award

Award

To be awarded to a returning female or male leader student-athlete. The athlete must show team leadership, community involvement, and is in good academic standing. The recipient will be chosen by the Director of Athletics. Donna graduated in 1990 with a degree in Recreation Management. After a few assistant management- leadership positions and work in the fitness industry, she entered the world of real estate. She has been recognized as an award-winning Realtor since 1992, continuing to focus on marketing and community development. Donna has established a positive reputation in the Annapolis Valley and beyond for her dedication to supporting community organizations and her clients. Donna credits her professor’s years at Acadia University for inspiring her to always keep working hard and growing her business.

Doreen Bennett Scholar-Bursary

Established by Doreen Bennett, of the class of 1947. The scholar-bursary will be awarded each year according to the following guidelines:

• Given to any student entering or returning to a degree program in the Faculty of Arts, with preference given to those students including religious studies in their program;

• Preference will be given to all round female students from the Maritimes, who have demonstrated their interest in community activities, have a sound character and qualities of good citizenship.

Doris Curry Bursary

The Doris Curry Bursary was endowed in 1984 by Mrs. Doris Curry of Ottawa, Ontario. The income is to be used to assist a continuing undergraduate student who has completed at least one semester at the University with good academic standing. The bursary shall be awarded on the basis of academic performance and financial need to a student who is not in receipt of other University scholarship or bursary support.

Doris Fraser Hiltz Chemistry Research Award

Award | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Chemistry, Pursuing an Honours Research Project

Established in 2020 by Doris Fraser Hiltz (’51, ’52), this award is designed to support the unique research work of Acadia’s most promising undergraduate Honours students in Chemistry. It will be awarded during the summer prior to the final honours year in recognition of the recipient’s Chemistry thesis proposal.

Doris Fraser grew up in New Glasgow, majored in Chemistry and played violin at Acadia. She earned a BSc (1951) and a BEd (1952) and went on to a full lab career with the Fisheries Research Board of Canada in Halifax where she met her husband. Raymond Hiltz was an oceanographic researcher who worked for many years at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography until they retired to New Glasgow where Doris continues to play violin in an orchestra and a trio.

Dorothy G. Walker Athletic Award

Award of up to $1,000 | Eligibility: Athletics

Established in 2020 by Dorothy Walker Robbins. To be awarded to a returning female basketball, volleyball, soccer, cross country or swimming varsity athlete. The recipient must be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.50 GPA, and present strong leadership qualities in the university and community. The recipient will be chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the head coach of the female varsity athletic program.

Dorothy Harris Oyler (’31) Bursary

Bursary | Eligibility: Arts, Art, Music, Theatre, Nova Scotia

Endowed in memory of John Oyler’s mother, the Dorothy Harris Oyler Bursary is available on an annual basis to full-time students in theatre, music or visual arts, who demonstrate financial need, with a preference for those from the Annapolis Valley (Hants, Kings, Annapolis, Digby Counties) and Lunenberg County.

Dorothy Harris was born in 1909 and grew up in Wolfville, graduating from Acadia in 1931 with a BA in English. Dorothy’s son, John Oyler (’59) established the bursary in her memory, honouring subject areas important to both of them, recognizing the value of the arts in education and everyday life.

Douglas (Red) Fraser Award

Award | Eligibility: Athletics

The Douglas (Red) Fraser Award is presented on recommendation of the Director of Athletics, to a returning hockey player with good academic standing who best exemplifies the qualities of sporting behaviour and leadership. Douglas (Red) Fraser graduated in 1948 with an Engineering Diploma and received his B.Sc. in 1954. He was a well known athlete both as a hockey player and a golfer. He was inducted into Acadia's Hockey Honour Roll in 1984.

Douglas A. Wilson Memorial Scholarship

The Douglas A. Wilson Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually, on recommendation of the Acadia Divinity College, to a needy full time student in a Masters program in Theological Education who shows character, promise of leadership and the desire to pursue a career in the Christian ministry.

The scholarship was established by the Class of 1948 in memory of their Life President, Douglas A. Wilson (BA Acadia 1948; D.D) who served as a Presbyterian minister for forty-one years before he passed away in October 1992. While a student at Acadia, he served his class and the larger community with dedication and distinction – attributes which were part of his natural character and personality, and endeared him to his classmates, and a legion of friends and parishioners.

Douglas and Frances Snow Scholarship

The Douglas and Frances Snow Scholarship in mathematics, provided through the generosity of the Snows, is awarded to a third or fourth year mathematics major on recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Dr. Douglas Snow (BSc Acadia, 1943; MA 1946; MSc Brown, 1952; PhD Queen's 1956) spent his career in the classrooms of academies and universities of the region and joined the staff of the mathematics department at Acadia in 1947, retiring in 1983. Frances Snow (BA Acadia, 1952; MEd Acadia, 1966) spent her career as a teacher in Yarmouth and Wolfville.

Douglas and Patricia Armstrong Award

The Douglas and Patricia Armstrong Award is presented annually to an incoming student in financial need from Nova Scotia, preferably from Kings County.

The award was established in 2021 by Douglas and Patricia Armstrong’s children in honour of their parents’ love of, and dedicate to, Acadia University. Douglas, a proud graduate of Horton Academy (’44), studied engineering at Acadia and was a versatile athlete, competing on all three for the Rugby, Track & Field, and Hockey teams. Pat Nancy Armstrong, nee Fraser, had a love of the arts, started 1st year studies for a BA and found time to compete on the Freshette Swim Team. Doug and Pat met at Acadia, then Pat went on to study nursing in Halifax. They married, raised five daughters while Doug ran a successful business in Kingston, NS. They were very proud to be part of the Acadia family, valued education, and helping others. It is the family’s hope that this award will support local students in pursuit of their academic goals and endeavours.

The Dr. A. H. MacLean Prize in History is annually awarded on nomination by the Head of the History Department to the graduating honours student who has submitted the best Honours thesis. The prize honours the memory of Dr. A. Harry MacLean who was Head of the History Department from 1960 to 1980 and Dean of Arts from 1966 to 1975.

The Dr. Alex Wright Memorial Award is awarded annually to a graduating student from each of the Kinesiology and Community Development programs who best exemplify energy and enthusiasm for learning, coupled with inquiring minds, and who demonstrate creative thinking, analytical reasoning, and effective communication skills. The Dr. Allister Irwin MacDonald Scholar-Bursary is awarded annually on recommendation of the English Department to a student entering the second or subsequent year of the Bachelor of Arts program, majoring or honouring in English. The award will be made to students with demonstrated financial need who are achieving a high academic standard and have a marked passion for English literature. At the discretion of the Department, the scholar-bursary may be divided between two students and may be renewed.

The scholar-bursary was established through the estate of Dr. Allister Irwin MacDonald, a scholar and Professor of English at Acadia, as a dedication to his immediate family – his parents Daniel and Ella MacDonald, and his five brothers; Samuel William, James Maxwell, Henry Burns, (Rev. Dr.) Donald Crockett and (Rev.) Joseph Richardson.

Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Ernest Barss Bursaries

The Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Ernest Barss Bursaries. These have been endowed by Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Ernest Barss of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and provide $573 to each of four first year students from the United States on the grounds of sporting behaviour, leadership, academic standing and need. The awards are to be made by the Bursary Committee on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Kinesiology and the Head of the Department of Community Development.

Dr. Anna Redden Scholarship

Established in 2021, the Dr. Anna Redden Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Biology honours student, preferably conducting research in coastal ecology. In support of equity, diversity and inclusion, a student of an underrepresented group demonstrating financial need will be considered first.

A three-time Acadia graduate, Dr. Anna Redden completed her studies with a PhD from Memorial University and began her teaching and research career at the University of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. Since 2005, Anna has been a member of Acadia’s Biology faculty, and as Director of the Acadia Centre for Estuarine Research and the Acadia Tidal Energy Institute has worked on a broad range of environmental issues and effects monitoring in coastal waters. Anna’s research activities with students have been focused largely on understanding coastal ecosystem productivity, tracking animal movements in high flow environments, and assessing potential effects of tidal energy development in the Bay of Fundy. As Associate Vice-President Research and Dean of Graduate Studies at Acadia, Dr. Redden is a tireless advocate for faculty and student research across the Acadia campus. Dr. Avery deWitt Bursary

The Dr. Avery deWitt Bursary is awarded annually to a varsity athlete with an interest in the study of medicine or health professions. Students must be enrolled in the Faculty of Science else the Kinesiology program. The bursary was established by family, friends, alumni and colleagues in memory of Dr. Avery deWitt (BA Acadia 1904; MD, CM McGill 1909) who served as University Physician from 1919 to 1956.

Dr. Blair Jarrett Hockey Award

Award of up to $3,000 | Eligibility: Athletics, Professional Studies, Pure and Applied Science

Established in 2021 by Blair Jarrett. To be awarded to a returning men’s varsity hockey athlete who demonstrates leadership qualities on and off the ice and is in good academic standing in Health Sciences or Kinesiology. The recipient will be chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with Head Coach of the men’s varsity hockey program. The inaugural disbursement of funds will be for the 2021-22 academic year.

Blair was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and recruited to Acadia after playing four years in the Ontario Hockey League. He was a member of the 2006 AUS championship team in his rookie season as a hockey Axemen, 4-time Academic All-Canadian with a BSc in Biology and Kinesiology, Athletic Therapy Program graduate, S.M.I.L.E. program volunteer and recipient of the George Wilbert Cox medal. Blair is now a practicing family physician and attributes his academic and athletic experiences at Acadia as being the integral foundation to his career in medicine.

Dr. Eleanor Chu Scholarship

Scholarship of up to $1,000 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics

Established in 2017 by Dr. Robert Hiscott in memory of Dr. Eleanor Chu (’80, ’81), this scholarship is awarded to full-time undergraduate students of high academic standing enrolled in a Mathematics or Physics degree program.

Born in 1950 in Taiwan, Eleanor Chu received her BSc in Agricultural Chemistry (1973) from the National Taiwan University. She then pursued studies in Physics and Mathematics at Acadia, earning a BSc (’80) and a MSc in Mathematics (’81). Further graduate studies in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo saw her receive a MMath (1984) and PhD (1988). Dr. Chu’s academic career began at the University of Waterloo (1988-1991) and continued at the University of Guelph (1991-2008) where she was promoted to Full Professor in 2001.

Dr. Chu was particularly grateful and appreciative for the wonderful, inspiring mentorship received from the faculty of Acadia University, especially Professor Fred Chipman who introduced her to the field of numerical analysis and supervised her MSc thesis

Dr. Ernest Hayes Research Fellowship

Research Fellowship | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Chemistry, Entering final Year

Established in 2021 by Phyllis Hayes in memory of her husband, Dr. Ernest Hayes, this fellowship is awarded to a student entering their final year of a chemistry program in recognition of their joint research with an Acadia professor. Intended to encourage and support an outstanding chemistry students, the fellowship will also assist the student in acquiring other research grants.

Dr. Ernest Hayes graduated from Acadia with an honours BSc degree in 1948 and an engineering certificate in 1949. He obtained an MSc from Dalhousie University in 1951 and a PhD in organic chemistry from McMaster University in 1958. He also did postdoctoral work at the Carnegie Mellon University. . He became Head of Acadia’s Chemistry Department in 1975 where he remained until his early death in 1992. Much of his teaching was in the first year and introductory organic chemistry classes where his kindness and patience made him extremely popular with his students.

Dr. Esther Isabel Clark Wright Scholarships

The Dr. Esther Isabel Clark Wright Scholarships were provided for in the Estate of Dr. Wright in 1990. They are awarded annually to superior in course students in the Faculty of Arts with a preference given to students majoring in History on recommendation of the Dean of Arts. Dr. Wright (B.A. Acadia, 1916; Ph.D., Radcliffe Harvard, '31) was the noted author of many works, articles and essays. She taught Sociology at Acadia from 1943 to 1947. Acadia awarded her an honourary degree in 1975. In 1988 the lounge in Chase Court was named in her honour and the Esther Clark Wright Archives were opened.

Dr. J. Murray Beardsley Research Scholarships in Biology

Two scholarships provided by the Grace Beardsley Trust Fund, are awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Biology to students in the Honours in Biology program. The Dr. Maurice Tugwell Bursary will be awarded annually to Acadia University students from the Department of Economics and/or the Manning School of Business Administration demonstrating financial need. Preference will be given to students displaying the following characteristics:

• strong leadership qualities, as demonstrated through community service and extracurricular activities;

• well-rounded, as demonstrated by good citizenship on campus and fostering a welcoming environment for fellow members of the Acadia community; and

• commitment to academic achievement, as demonstrated by a strong work ethic and satisfactory academic performance.

The bursary was established in 2019 and made possible through the generosity of Dr. Maurice Tugwell and alumni and friends. Dr. Tugwell was a beloved Acadia professor to over 13,000 students during his 35 years at Acadia (1972-2007). A larger-than-life figure on campus, Dr. Tugwell embodied the Acadia experience and lifted the spirts of all students, either in his classroom or through a chance encounter on campus. Dr. Tugwell was repeatedly recognized for his accomplishments at Acadia, most notably through the Acadia Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award, the Acadia Students’ Union “Most Wanted” Teacher Recognition Award, and the Atlantic Universities’ Distinguished Teacher Award, to name a few. Dr. Tugwell left an indelible mark on the Acadia campus and it is the hope that this endowed Bursary will continue to do the same for students in need for generations to come

Roscoe (BA '18, Hon '48) an eminent scholar and educator who influenced successive generations to major scientific accomplishments. Dr. Roscoe taught in the Biology Department at Acadia for 14 years beginning in 1926 and later joined the Botany Department at McGill University where she served as chair for many years.

The Dr. Robert Graeme Boutilier Memorial Research Award is awarded annually on recommendation of the Biology Department to support an honours summer research student in Biology. On the 25th anniversary of the Swiss Air 111 crash at Peggy’s Cove, the Walker Wood Foundation honoured Dr. Trevor Jain (’93) for his military medical service as the pathology operations officer at the temporary morgue for victims at Shearwater’s air force base. He was a 4th-year medical student at the time, and an army reservist, following his BSc in Biology from Acadia. Dr. Jain is a 36-year veteran and Lt.Col. in the Canadian Armed Forces, a strong community advocate and teacher whose commitment to the health and well-being of others has been acknowledged through numerous awards and accolades including the Meritorious Service Medal of Canada for his work with the Swiss Air 111 victims, the Order of Military Merit and the Acadia Distinguished Alumni Award.

Dr. Zelda Abramson Award

Award | Eligibility: Sociology, Current 4th year

An annual award given to a fourth-year honours sociology student who is selected by sociology faculty, as demonstrating characteristics central to Dr Abramson's academic and personal philosophy. This includes actively contributing to the Acadia community, the Wolfville community, and the broader sociology community through advocacy and/or academics. In particular, contributing in the areas of feminism, women and gender studies, applied research, and/or archival research.

Dr. Zelda Abramson is a brilliant academic, a passionate advocate, and an unwaveringly generous mentor. Zelda profoundly impacted the lives of students, staff, and faculty during her Acadia tenure where she served as an associate professor and head of the Department of Sociology

Zelda is an accomplished academic and a public sociologist. She fought tirelessly to make Wolfville a safer, more inclusive community. Zelda's academic interests include feminism, health, women and gender studies, applied qualitative and quantitative research, and archival research. One of Zelda's most outstanding works is her book, MONTREAL SHTETL: Making Home after the Holocaust, written with her partner John Lynch. This book details the less than glamorous realities of the survivors of the Holocaust who settled in Montreal, a topic dear to Zelda as this is how she and her family arrived in Canada.

Zelda cared deeply about her students. She generously opened her office and home and was always available to give feedback or teach how to make fresh challah bread and hummus. Zelda's unwavering support shaped a generation of academics and advocates. Through this award, Zelda will be able to continue to support generations of Acadia students wherever life takes her. The profound impact Zelda had on the lives of the staff, students and faculty of Acadia can never be reflected by any award, but her contribution to Acadia will forever be cherished and celebrated.

Dream Chaser Change Maker Award

Award of up to $1,000 | Eligibility: Arts, Professional Studies, Pure and Applied Science

Established in 2017 by three Acadia friends, the Dream Chaser Change Maker Award, is awarded annually to an outstanding student who embodies the Acadia spirit. This student embraces everything an education can offer by ambitiously supporting social and or environmental change in their local community or around the world. Having overcome adversity in their own lives, they give back to society and community through active volunteerism. The recipient will be awarded funding for their own education; to chase their dreams, as well as an opportunity to ignite change with funds donated to their choice of UNICEF education programs in developing countries.

Niluka Kottegoda (’03) created the Dream Chaser Change Maker concept to help improve accessibility to education both in Canada and around the world. Close friends Chantal Pelham-Edwards (’03) and Laura Rutherford Watt (’02, ’04) enthusiastically joined the effort. As recipients of awards at Acadia, they wanted to give back to their alma mater and reward students who have qualities most meaningful to their Acadia experience. Niluka, a Vice President at Sobeys Inc., recently completed her Kellogg-Schulich Executive MBA based in Toronto. Chantal holds a BA in Political Science from Acadia and is Principal of Third Sector Enhancement Ltd. Laura graduated from Acadia with a BSc (Math) and a BEd and currently is teaching Secondary Mathematics and Science in Calgary.

The Duncan Grant Lovat Fraser Scholarship in Political Science was established in honour of D.G.L. Fraser (B.A., M.A. Acadia, '48, '49; C.D.), former Head and long time member of the Department of Political Science, by his friends, colleagues and former students. The award is made annually to the top student entering year three in the political science program.
