James L. Stokesbury Memorial Scholarship in History

Scholarship | Eligibility: Arts, History, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

The James L. Stokesbury Memorial Scholarship in History provided by the family and friends of the late Dr. Stokesbury, is awarded annually to a student entering the second or subsequent year of a program leading to a major or honours degree in History, preferably with an interest in European history. Academic performance and need will be the criteria for the awarding of the scholarship. Preference will be given to students who do not already hold major university scholarships.

Dr. James L. Stokesbury (1934 -1995) (BA Acadia, MA Western, PhD Duke) was a long­time member of the Department of History at Acadia University, serving as Head of the Department from 1980-1986. He was an outstanding teacher, and an author of international repute.

Janis and Felicita Kalejs Memorial Award in Music

The Janis and Felicita Kalejs Memorial Award in Music is awarded annually to a promising student of strings on recommendation from the School of Music.

This award was established through gifts in memory of the late Dean Janis Kalejs and Professor Felicita Kalejs of the School of Music. The Kalejs', through their teaching, inspired their students to use their talents in their careers, for their own pleasure, and for the enjoyment of others: Janis in strings from 1949 to 1973 and Felicita in piano from 1949 to 1979.

Jean Amy and Jane MacIntyre Memorial Award in Music

The Jean Amy & Jane MacIntyre Memorial Award in Music is awarded annually on recommendation of the Director of the School of Music to a student registered in that School who is making commendable progress with preference given in the study of piano or organ.

The award was first provided in 1980 by the late Mrs. MacIntyre's sister, Mrs. W.D. Burden, and daughters, Mrs. Mary Charlotte Reeves and Mrs. Jean P. Amy. The award was updated in 2005 through the generosity of the estate of Jean P. Amy (Class of ’43). Jane MacIntyre graduated from the Acadia Seminary in 1914.”

Jean Swift Education Award

The Jean Swift Education Award is provided annually to a student pursuing a Bachelor of Education degree. Preference will be given to a student from the Springhill/Cumberland County area with demonstrated financial need. The recipient will be chosen on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Education.

The award has been established to honour Jean Swift (DSS, Acadia, 1944) who pursued a career in educating others, by her sons David and Bruce (BSC, CAS, Acadia, 1978) Tuck.

Jennie Welton Bursary

The Jennie Welton Bursary. A fund yielding $180 bequeathed by the late Jennie Welton (Acadia, 1909), shall be used annually to assist needy and deserving women students in the second year.

Joan Sutherland Murray Memorial Scholarship (Piano)

Scholarship of up to $315 | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Music, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

The Joan Sutherland Murray Memorial Scholarship (Piano) is awarded annually on the recommendation of the School of Music to a deserving student majoring in piano. The scholarship was established in memory of Mrs. Murray (B.A. Sec. Science Diploma Acadia, 1953) who, as an accomplished musician, held a life-long interest in music.

Joanne Strum Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Computer Science, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

The Joanne Strum Memorial Scholarship established by family and friends in memory of Joanne Strum (1965-1987), the income from this fund is available for the support of a Canadian student entering the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate program in Computer Science. The recipient shall have good academic standing, demonstrated financial need and shall not hold any other major award. The award shall be made by the Scholarships, Prizes and Awards Committee, acting on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Computer Science.

John S Stevens Scholar-Bursaries

Scholar-Bursary | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Pure and Applied Science, Applied Science, Education, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year

The John S Stevens Scholar-Bursaries are awarded annually to one student in the Bachelor of Applied Science or Certificate in Applied Science program and to one student in the Bachelor of Education degree program who aspires to a career in special education. Preference will be given to students from Nova Scotia. These scholar-bursaries are awarded to entering or in-course students on the basis of financial need and academic performance. These scholar-bursaries are made possible through an endowment from the late John S. Stevens (CAS Acadia 1945

Jonathan Andrews Memorial Award

Award of up to $3,000 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Current 2nd year

The Jonathan Andrews Memorial Award. Established in 2013 by family and friends in memory of Jonathan Andrews. To be awarded to a returning Acadia second year undergraduate science student in recognition of an exceptional connection with the greater community. Through the use of intellect, empathy, and humour, the recipient will have had significant positive impact on others. Awards will be made based on applications to be reviewed by committee.
