Director, Food Safety and Operations Learning

Maple Leaf Foods Inc.

Room 107, Patterson Hall

In 2008, twenty-three people, across five provinces, died as a result of a listeriosis outbreak that was eventually linked to meats produced at a Maple Leaf plant in Ontario.  Since that tragic event, the organization has transformed its commitment to food safety, treating it as a non-competitive issue and sharing their learnings with other manufacturers in order to continuously raise the bar within the food industry.

In 2009, Lone Jespersen became responsible for the execution of the Maple Leaf Foods’ food safety strategy.  She will discuss the importance of understanding human behaviour and the strategy that Maple Leaf adopted and the tactics deployed, to transform the culture of food safety within the organization.
