Celebrating 178 years, Founders' Day 2016

Acadia University celebrated its 178th anniversary on November 15, 2016 with a full slate of events, including Cookie Day, sponsored by Chartwells; a Founders’ Day ceremony that included a tribute to alumnus Dr. Charles B. Huggins (’20) on the 50th anniversary of his receiving the Nobel Prize; and a reception in the evening to acknowledge the generosity of Acadia’s donors hosted by Chancellor Libby Burnham (’60).

Chancellor Burnham and University President Ray Ivany kicked things off by handing out cookies throughout the day to students at various locations around campus. Ivany later extolled the foundational benefits of the kind of liberal arts education Acadia offers at the Founders’ Day ceremony, and remarked on how it afforded Huggins a platform upon which he could build his distinguished career in medicine. Professor Emeritus Dr. Tom Herman was a special guest at the event and spoke to Huggins’s capacity as a researcher and moreover his warmth as a human being whose humility was as much a hallmark of his career as were his many successes.

The annual Chancellor’s Reception rounded out Founders’ Day 2016, as members of the Acadia alumni community, faculty, staff and friends gathered to reminiscence, hear information and updates about the University, and share some fellowship in the Sheldon L. Fountain Learning Commons.
