Conference celebrates student research

Both honours undergraduate and graduate student research were featured at the Third Annual Student Research Conference held February 26 and 27 at Acadia University.

Hosted by the Acadia Graduate Student (AGS) executive, the conference was supported by the AGS in cooperation with the President's Office, School of Research and Graduate Studies, and the Acadia Students' Union.

This year's theme was "Research Builds Bridges" and the conference featured keynote speaker, Dr. David Duke, associate professor in the Acadia's Department of History and Classics.

This conference has been gaining momentum over the past three years and offers an excellent opportunity for Acadia students to showcase their research and share their findings with fellow students across disciplines and faculties while gaining experience giving oral presentations.

The conference had 32 oral presentations from across many departments including: Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, English, History, Math & Statistics, Social & Political Thought, and Sociology. Each presentation was judged by professors in Faculties of the Arts, Sciences, and Professional Studies.

Award winners included:

The Dean of Research and Graduate Studies Award for best graduate student presentation: Morgan Brown in the Biology Department for her talk titled, "Adult and hatch-year blackpoll warblers exhibit radically different regional-scale movements during post-fledging."

The President's Award for best honours student presentation: Mercedes Peters in the History Department for her talk titled, "A respectable solution to the Indian Problem: Canadian Genocidal Intent, Non-Physical Conceptions of Destruction and Nova Scotia Mi'Kmaq 1867-1970."

The Student Choice Award voted on by conference attendees: Davita DesRoches, a double honours in English and Mathematics and Statistics titled, "Weaving Fantastic Garlands: Graphing Networks of Meaning in Charlotte Smith's Elegant Sonnets."
