Senior academic appointments confirmed for upcoming year

Acadia University has confirmed senior academic leadership appointments and renewals for the upcoming academic year.

Dr. Jeff Hennessey is reappointed to a three-year interim term as Dean, Faculty of Arts. Jeff was formerly the Acting Dean of Arts and a three-year interim term will allow Jeff and the Faculty of Arts to continue their reforms, including the exciting curricular changes currently under discussion. Jeff earned his BSc from Trent University, his BMus from Acadia, his MA from the University of British Columbia and his PhD from the University of Toronto. In 2007, he was appointed to a six-year term as Acadia’s Director of the School of Music. 

Dr. Jeff Hooper is appointed Acting Dean of Pure and Applied Science for the period July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, replacing former Dean Dr. Peter Williams. Jeff joined Acadia in 2001 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and since 2009 has served several terms as Head of the Department. He has a BSc and MSc from the University of Windsor and earned his PhD from McMaster University. In 2007, he was awarded the Community Leadership in Teaching Award by the Acadia Students’ Union.

Ann Smith is reappointed to an additional two-year term as Acting University Librarian. Ann came to the Vaughan Memorial Library in July 2002.  She obtained her MSc in Information and Library Management from the University of Central England and holds a BA (Hons) in English Literature from Bangor University, Wales. Ann was first appointed Acting Librarian in 2014.

Dr. Jeff Banks is reappointed for a one-year term as Acting Registrar and will continue in his role as Director of Open Acadia. Jeff earned his BSc from the University of Prince Edward Island and his PhD from the University of Ottawa. In addition to Acadia, he has held teaching positons at Lakehead University and the University of New Brunswick and returned to Acadia in 2008 as Head of the Department of Chemistry. Jeff has an extensive record of achievement as both an academic and entrepreneur.

“I am grateful for the energy and commitment these academic leaders have brought to their positions,” said Ray Ivany, Acadia’s President and Vice-Chancellor. “Our university community has been well-served by each of them and their willingness to take on additional duties helps keep us focused on our academic priorities. We have a robust agenda over the next year and I am looking forward to the contribution each member of our senior leadership team will make to the achievement of our goals.”
