Acadia pledges more support for student refugees

Dear campus community,

Around the world, innocent people must flee war, injustice, hunger, poverty, and other forms of violence and oppression. Over the past few weeks, we have been reminded of this and are shocked by the latest act of terror being inflicted upon the people of Ukraine by the Government of Russia and the human tragedy that is resulting from this unprovoked and illegal war.

Acadia University strongly supports Universities Canada’s condemnation of this invasion of a free, independent, and democratic nation, and stands in solidarity with faculty, staff and students from Ukraine, Russia, and other countries impacted by this unprovoked and illegal war. We are also conscious of ongoing conflicts in other parts of the world, such as Afghanistan and Syria, that are forcing people from their homes and their homelands.

Appealing for your support

In support of those escaping violence and war, Acadia University is appealing for donations to our International Student Support Fund so that we can fund refugee students from Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, or other countries from which Canada is welcoming refugees.

Currently, students who are declared refugees by the Canadian government have the international differential fee waived. The goal of our fundraising efforts is to provide full tuition for at least one student who is a refugee from a current war or conflict zone during the 2022-23 academic year and for the duration of their program of study.

Acadia University will match donations

Established in 2014 by an anonymous donor, Acadia’s International Student Support Fund was created to assist international students in financial distress. In order to further assist refugee students, Acadia will match donations to the International Student Support Fund up to a maximum of $50,000.

Thank you for your support and your concern.

Sincerely,

Peter
