B.V.I. Memorial Award

Award | Eligibility: Athletics, Aboriginal and/or Africian Nova Scotia

The B.V.I Memorial Award is provided annually to a varsity football player who demonstrates quality of character both as a student and athlete. Preference will be given to a student with financial need and of Aboriginal or African descent. The award is on recommendation of the Head Football Coach and the Director of Varsity Athletics and may be renewed at their discretion. The Award is made available through a gift from Gordon B. Swinamer and is in memory and honor of his wife Barbara, his mother Vera, and his mother-in-law Irene.

Barbara and Phillip Thorpe Scholar-Bursary

Bursary | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Nova Scotia

Established in 2014 by alumnus Phillip Thorpe ('58) and his wife Barbara, to be awarded on a renewable basis to a entering full-time undergraduate student in the Faculty of Science. This student, from Nova Scotia, must demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.

Born in Wolfville, Phillip Thorpe grew up on a farm in Ross Corner, Nova Scotia and attended Acadia with his brother Ralph, where they roomed together for four years. After receiving his CAS and BSc (Math), Phil attended McGill for engineering and met and married Barbara, who was studying biochemistry. They moved to Calgary where Phil made his career with Shell.

Barrett Corporation Award

Award | Eligibility: Entering first year

The Barrett Corporation Award is provided to any students entering Acadia University who are children of full-time employees of Barrett Corporation and its subsidiaries (provided they are not recipients of the Barrett Scholarship). The award will be provided toward the first year of study. Recipients will also receive an offer for summer employment with Barrett Corporation or one of its subsidiaries throughout the student's program at Acadia.

Barry Moody (’67) Scholarship in the Arts

Established in 2014 by Patricia Townsend to honour the dedication of Dr. Barry Moody, ’67 as a professor, scholar and administrator, this scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time student entering third of fourth year, in the Faculty of Arts in recognition of academic excellence and leadership. Beatrice Spence-Ross Scholarship

Scholarship of up to $835 | Eligibility: Arts, Pure and Applied Science, Psychology, Sociology, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

The Beatrice Spence-Ross Scholarship was established by Dr. Beatrice Spence-Ross, social psychologist and historian, counsellor and popular writer, and a former member of the Acadia University Department of Sociology. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Sociology or the Department of Psychology to a student with high academic standing in the third or fourth year of undergraduate study, majoring in one of these departments and who intends to proceed to post baccalaureate study in gerontology. Preference may be given to a female student who is a resident of Annapolis or Hants Counties.

Bell Family Scholarship

The Bell Family Scholarship is awarded annually to an entering well-rounded student from Liverpool Regional High School, Nova Scotia on the basis of academic performance. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need. The gifted scholarship was established in 2005 by Dr. Frank G. Bell (BA, BSCH Acadia 1949, 1950) and the Bell Family.

Bernard N. Cain Memorial Scholarship (Engineering)

Scholarship of up to $2,095 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Applied Science, Current 2nd year

The Bernard N. Cain Memorial Scholarship (Engineering) was established in 1980 by alumni, friends and family of Professor Cain (E.C. Acadia, 1933; B.Eng. N.S.T.C., 1935) who joined the faculty of the School of Engineering in 1938 and was Dean from 1953 to 1961. It provides one or two scholarships each year to be awarded on the recommendation of the School of Engineering to students who have completed at least one year of study at Acadia, who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and who show strong potential for the practice of engineering.

Bertie Bowlby Schurman Memorial Scholarships

The Bertie Bowlby Schurman Memorial Scholarships. Two scholarships of $800 each are to be awarded annually to students whose homes are in Queens County, Nova Scotia, and Prince County, Prince Edward Island, respectively. Funds for these scholarships were provided through a bequest from Bertie Bowlby Schurman in memory of Mr. and Mrs. John Davis Schurman, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Bowlby and Robert Percival Schurman.

Beulah Wry Noble Memorial Scholarship in Music

Scholarship | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Music, Entering first year

The Beulah Wry Noble Memorial Scholarship in Music was provided through the generosity of Otto A. Noble (B.Sc. Acadia, 1926) in memory of his wife. The renewable entrance scholarship of $1250 is awarded to a superior student on recommendation of the Director of the School of Music. The late Mrs. Noble was born in Sackville, New Brunswick, and graduated from Acadia Ladies Seminary in 1926 with diplomas in piano and voice and later studied fine arts at Mount Allison. Throughout her life she devoted much time and energy to active church work.

Beveridge Science Scholarship

Scholarship of up to $2,000 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Entering final Year

The Beveridge Science Scholarship in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science is awarded annually to a student entering their final year of an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty. The criterion for the scholarship shall be broadly based on academic excellence and is awarded to a student who best exemplifies the qualities, initiative, experimental learning, leadership and enthusiasm for their area of study, as determined by the previous year’s marks and on the basis of an interview and a dossier which will be reviewed by an examining committee. Dr. J.M.R . Beveridge (BSc Acadia ’37; PhD Toronto ’40; MD Western ’50), was the President of Acadia University 1964-78. The award is provided by the Associated Alumni of Acadia University.

Bill Parker Hockey Award

Established in 2019 by Peter Sheppard (’70). To be awarded to a returning varsity men’s hockey player who exemplifies leadership qualities on his team and in the community. The recipient shall be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.50 sessional grade point average. The recipient will be chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the head coach of the varsity men’s hockey program.

The Bill Smith Memorial Scholarship. An endowed scholarship is provided by Mr. and Mrs. David Alman

Smith of Moncton, New Brunswick, in memory of their son, Cadet Officer Willis (Bill) Smith (Acadia, Ex '55) who was killed in training in 1952.- To be awarded annually by the faculty to an Acadia student at the end of the first year on grounds of sporting behaviour, scholarship and leadership.

Bill Wade Scholar-Bursary

Scholar-Bursary of up to $4,000 | Eligibility: Nova Scotia

Established in 2017 by Beth Wade in memory of her husband, Bill, this award is granted on a renewable basis to an entering “all around” full-time student who demonstrates financial need and exhibits the qualities of a community leader, through volunteering, civic engagement, sports or political activities. Eligible recipients have graduated from high school in Nova Scotia, preferably in Kings County.

Bill Wade grew up in Kentville and returned home a couple of years after university to join the family grocery business, developing a chain of independent grocery stores across the Annapolis Valley. An athlete and sports enthusiast from a young age, Bill was an active volunteer with teams, church, service and political organizations and local business development. He served on the Acadia Board of Governors and was a founding member of the Blueline and Red, White and Blue Clubs.

BioMedica Diagnostics Science Award

Award of up to $5,200 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Entering first year

Established in 2021 BioMedica Diagnostics, this renewable entrance award is available to a science student demonstrating financial need and strong academic success. Students of BIPOC background who have experience contributing to community or family needs in a volunteer capacity are preferred. Considering a career in science, the recipient will have the opportunity to meet with staff at BioMedica Diagnostics and explore the possibility of a work term if the recipient has enrolled in Acadia’s Co-op program at the beginning of second year.

Bishop Silver Medal

Medal | Eligibility: Professional Studies

The Bishop Silver Medal is awarded annually at Spring Convocation to the graduating student from the Faculty of Professional Studies whose standing is closest to that of the Governor General's medalist. The medal was established in 1983 in recognition of the many contributions made by the Bishop family to Acadia and especially in memory of Marianne Bishop Brotz (1946-1982).

Bittner Scholarship in English

The Bittner Scholarship in English was established by Alice Holmer Bittner in memory of her husband William R. Bittner who was a professor of English at Acadia from 1967 to 1977. Preference is given to a student demonstrating an interest in creative writing.

BLM/TRC Awards

Award

The BLM/TRC Awards are granted on an annual and renewable basis to domestic students of African or Indigenous descent with financial need in any year of study. All renewed recipients will have demonstrated involvement in campus initiatives and will have helped to foster a welcoming environment for fellow members of the Acadia community.

The BLM/TRC Awards were established in 2020 as an acknowledgement of and in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Acadia University is committed to combatting systemic racism and increasing bursary funding directed to African Canadian and Indigenous students. Both populations have been impacted by historic injustices still present in Canada today and are clearly identifiable by ethnicity. As education is the root of progress at individual, community, and societal levels, these bursaries will accelerate progress and empower these communities by improving and encouraging access to post-secondary education.

Award of up to $1,500 | Eligibility: Athletics

The award fund has been established through the generosity of the BMO Financial Group in recognition of the longstanding and respectful relationship between the Bank of Montreal (BMO) and Acadia University. These awards, in the amount of $1,500 each, will be evenly distributed among returning male and female varsity student-athletes who demonstrate positive leadership skills and are in good academic standing. Recipients will be selected by the Executive Director of Athletics.

Scholarship of up to $1,000 | Eligibility: Entering first year

The scholarship fund has been established through the generosity of the BMO Financial Group in recognition of the longstanding and respectful relationship between the Bank of Montreal (BMO) and Acadia University. These scholarships, in the amount of $1,000 each, will be offered to students entering full-time undergraduate study at Acadia University with an average of between 90 and 94.9%. Funds not expended in any given academic year will be carried over and offered in subsequent years.

Board of Governors Family Bursaries

Bursary

The Board of Governors Family Bursaries. The Board of Governors of Acadia University will provide a bursary in the amount of $1000 per student in those cases in which there are three or more children from one family registered as full-time students in a program during the September to April academic year at the University, paying full fees and not holding major awards. Application will be received through the Financial Aid Office.

Board of Governors Voluntary Service Bursary

Bursary

The Board of Governors Voluntary Service Bursary. Canadian citizens who are registered in a baccalaureate program of at least five credits may receive a tuition waiver in the year of study immediately following full-time voluntary service abroad with Crossroads International, C.U.S.O., C.I.D.A. or similar organizations. The period of service must be at least four months and must have been immediately prior to undertaking full time study at Acadia. The tuition waiver is available to those whose financial resources would otherwise not be sufficient to permit full time study.

Bob Cameron Football Award

Award | Eligibility: Athletics

Established in 2019 by Bob Cameron (’77). To be awarded to a returning varsity men’s football player who demonstrates an ability to successfully communicate with, motivate and appreciate others. The recipient shall be in good academic standing and will be chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the head coach of the varsity men’s football program.

The award honours Bob Cameron, Axemen quarterback from 1974 to 1978. He was the recipient of the Hec Crighton Award in 1977. After Acadia, Bob had an outstanding CFL career spanning 23 years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as a punter. He helped the Blue Bombers to six Grey Cup appearances and three Grey Cup victories.

The Bob Smye (’78) Memorial Award will be presented annually to a returning football student-athlete. Preference will be given to a recipient that requires financial assistance, demonstrates a strong academic standing and provides leadership in the community. The recipient will be chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the Head Coach.

Brian Walling Football Award

Award | Eligibility: Athletics

Established in 2019 by Brian Walling. To be awarded to a returning football athlete. The recipient must be in good academic standing, and present strong leadership qualities in the community. The recipient will be chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with head coach of the men’s varsity football program.

Brian Walling was a Hec Crighton nominee at Acadia and a three-time conference MVP and named an All-Canadian. He smashed conference and national records during his five years. After Acadia, Brian enjoyed a ten-year CFL career including eight with the Edmonton Eskimos. He was a member of two Grey Cup championships.

Buckley Family Award

Award | Eligibility: Environmental Science

Established in 2018 by Ron Buckley ('57), the Buckley Family Award is available to full-time science students in second year who are majoring in Earth and Environmental Science, formerly known as the Department of Geology. The recipients exhibit leadership skills and a promising future in the earth and environmental science industry.

Ron Buckley graduated from Acadia in 1957 with a BSc in Geology and continued his academic career at McGill University where he earned a MSc in 1959. He taught Geology courses at Acadia in the mid-90s. Ron's brother, Dale, graduated with the same degree at Acadia in 1959 and continued his studies at the University of Western Ontario where he received a MSc in 1963. He continued his academic career, working toward a PhD at the University of Alaska. Ron's granddaughter, Lauren Buckley, graduated from Acadia in 2018 with a BKin.

Burnett W. and Bessie C. Ralston Scholarship
