With education costs on the rise, enhancing student assistance is a top priority for Acadia. Each year, we award more than $4 million to students in the form of scholarships, scholar-bursaries, bursaries, awards, and prizes. By maintaining a strong scholarship and financial assistance program, we are able to attract, retain and support our students.

As a donor to scholarships and financial assistance, you can direct your gift toward: general award funds or awards for specific departments, faculties, research, or athletic teams; any existing named awards; or you can create a personal legacy by establishing a named award yourself. Caleb Rand Bill Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Current 1st year

The Caleb Rand Bill Scholarship being an amount of $280 is awarded annually to the student resident in Kings County, Nova Scotia, who shows all round diligence and ability during their first year.

Carl and Miriam Beals Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Arts, Pure and Applied Science

The Carl and Miriam Beals Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually from the Estate of Carlyle Smith Beals (B.A. Acadia, 1919; M.A., Toronto, 1923; Ph.D., Imperial College of Science and Technology, London Un., 1926; D.Sc., London, 1934; (hon.) D.Sc., Acadia 1948) and Miriam Bancroft Beals (Acadia Ladies Sem. 1922). It is awarded in alternate years to a continuing student in fine arts and a student in the general field of science on recommendation of the Dean of Arts and Dean of Pure and Applied Science respectively.

Carl J. Sanders Memorial Scholarships

Scholarship | Eligibility: Entering first year

The Carl J. Sanders Memorial Scholarships. (a) The late Carl J. Sanders of Toronto provided an endowment sufficient to permit the award of two scholarships of $1500, one of $1200 and two of $1000. These scholarships are awarded each year to students entering the freshman class and each is renewable for up to four years. (b) Two non renewable scholarships of $1000 each are awarded each year from the same endowment to entering freshman students.

Catherine Stanley Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Mathematics and Statistics

Established in 2017, this scholarship honours the memory of Dr. Catherine Stanley, a member of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 2002 until 2015. In recognition of Catherine’s love of mathematics, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated joy and enthusiasm in learning and teaching mathematics and statistics. Recognized for outstanding academic achievement, the recipient will also have demonstrated excellence as a department Teaching Assistant. The scholarship is awarded to mathematics majors on the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Catherine Stanley received awards and accolades for her achievements in mathematics throughout her elementary and secondary school years in Ontario and Australia. This continued through her three degrees at the University of Toronto. Catherine had a deep love of the absolute and outright perfection which exists within mathematics. In her words, “Teaching math at Acadia University was a career I never planned, but I found great joy in teaching. I loved my students. All of them. From first year Intro Stats to third year Number Theory. Thank you all for the honour of working with you.”

Cecil H. and Elizabeth C. Kennedy Memorial Scholarships

Scholarship | Eligibility: Arts, Latin, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year

The Cecil H. and Elizabeth C. Kennedy Memorial Scholarships. Several scholarships to a total value of $10,425 are awarded annually to students entering their second or subsequent year in the Bachelor of Arts program who in the previous year have attained a high overall average and first­class standing in either Greek or Latin. In years when there is an insufficient number of candidates who meet all criteria for the award, the scholarships may be awarded to other meritorious students in the Faculty of Arts on the recommendation of the Dean.

Cecil Patterson Blakeley Business Administration Scholarship

The Cecil Patterson Blakeley Business Administration Scholarship will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Business to students entering or returning to the School of Business. Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated leadership qualities and an interest in community activities.This endowed scholarship was established in 2008 with an estate gift from Shirley Alice Blakeley (LMU, BM Acadia 1949, 1950).

Centennial Class Scholarship (Class of 1938)

Scholarship

The Centennial Class Scholarship (Class of 1938). A scholarship of $2035 which is the interest on a fund established by the Class in 1984. The scholarship is awarded annually to a worthy student who has completed at least one year of study at Acadia and who is in need. At the discretion of the Scholarship Committee, two scholarships of equal value may be awarded.

Chancellor Libby Burnham Scholarship

Scholarship of up to $2,000 | Eligibility: Arts, Entering final Year

The Chancellor Libby Burnham Scholarship in the Faculty of Arts is awarded annually to a student entering their final year of an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty. The scholarship will be awarded to a student in recognition of their contributions to the Arts in their field of study, academics, as determined by the previous year’s marks and on the basis of an interview and the submission of a representative piece of work or works, which will be reviewed by an examining committee. Dr. Libby Burnham was the 6th Chancellor of Acadia University. She graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts and went on to become a lawyer. The award is provided by the Associated Alumni of Acadia University.

Charles A. Eaton Memorial Scholarship

The Charles A. Eaton Memorial Scholarship of $3608 ($902 a year for up to four years) endowed by the late Senator W. H. Dennis in recognition of the long and eminent public service of the Hon. Charles A. Eaton.

Charles Edward (4), the Jane Elizabeth (4) and the William Leslie (4) Patterson Entrance Scholarships

Scholarship | Eligibility: Entering first year

The Charles Edward (4), the Jane Elizabeth (4) and the William Leslie (4) Patterson Entrance Scholarships, each valued at $8452 ($2113 annually for four years), are awarded each year. These scholarships have been provided through a legacy of the late Dr. W.L. Patterson, one of Acadia's distinguished alumni (Class of 1902).

Charles Woodbury Williams Scholarship in English

Scholarship of up to $730 | Eligibility: Arts, English, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

The Charles Woodbury Williams Scholarship in English of the value of $730 is to be awarded at the discretion of the English Department. Normally priority will be given to an honours student of outstanding ability, but failing such, the scholarship may be awarded to a major student of exceptional promise.

Charlotte Burditt Sutherland Memorial Scholarships

Scholarship | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Education, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year

The Charlotte Burditt Sutherland Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually. One will be given on recommendation of the Director of the School of Education to a superior student who aspires to a career in special education. Preference will be given to a student with financial need. One will be given at the discretion of the Scholarship, Prizes and Awards Committee to an entering student, including an applicant entering as a mature student.The two scholarships are in memory of Charlotte Burditt Sutherland (B.A. Acadia, 1961; B.Ed., 1962), who by her involvement with Acadia University and her concern for people, showed a lifetime commitment to disadvantaged members of society. The scholarships were established and made available through the generosity of family, friends and the Class of 1961.

Chester W. Small Scholarship in Chemistry

Scholarship | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Chemistry, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year

The Chester W. Small Scholarship in Chemistry is provided by alumni, students and friends of Dr. Small who was a member of the Chemistry Department from 1926 to 1966 and Head from 1957 to 1966. It is awarded annually on recommendation of the Department to a student entering third or fourth year of undergraduate study in the B.Sc. in Chemistry and who has completed with distinction twelve hours of study in chemistry at the 2000 level or above in the previous year.

Clara Marshall Raymond Scholarships

Scholarship

The Clara Marshall Raymond Scholarships. Funds were originally provided by Miss Mary Raymond of New York City in memory of her mother, Mrs. Clara Marshall Raymond, the first woman graduate of Acadia (Class of 1884). Additional funds were provided during the one hundredth anniversary of the graduation of the first woman from Acadia. Two scholarships of $1475 each are awarded to women at the end of year three for support in year four. Recipients must have superior academic records and show qualities of good character and leadership.

Clara McLearn Blakeley Music Scholarship

The Clara McLearn Blakeley Music Scholarship will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Music to students entering or returning to the School of Music. Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated leadership qualities and an interest in community activities. Clarke K. McLeod Pre Medical Scholarships

Scholarship | Eligibility: Pre-Med

The Clarke K. McLeod Pre Medical Scholarships are provided from the Estate of Dr. Clarke Kenneth McLeod (B.A. Acadia, 1922; M.D., C.M. McGill, 1927) of Millstream, New Brunswick, and Montreal, Quebec. The scholarships are available to selected students who have completed at least one year of study at Acadia, are registered full time in a Bachelor's degree program following the premedical program prescribed by McGill University, are registered in a full course load and maintaining an average of at least 80 percent on all courses with no grade less than 70 percent. The scholarships may be extended to the period of attendance at McGill University on the basis of satisfactory progress.

Class of '64 Kirkconnell Scholarship

The Class of '64 Kirkconnell Scholarship was established in 2014 on the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1964 and in memory of their honorary class member Dr. Watson Kirkconnell, President of Acadia University 1948-1964. Awarded to a returning full-time student in any program in recognition of academic excellence and financial need. This scholarship is an amalgamation of the former Class of ’64 Scholarship and the Kirkconnell Scholarship.

The Class of '67 Memorial Scholarship is currently awarded each year to a superior student in the second or subsequent year of a baccalaureate program, in memory of deceased members of the class.

The Class of 1892 Scholarship. The Class of 1892 contributed a sum to provide $40 which will be given annually to the student who makes the highest average in the junior year.

The Class of 1905 Scholarship. The Class of 1905 has established an annual scholarship of $80 to be awarded to the second year student in Arts who has made the highest average in the first year.

The Class of 1929 Music Scholarships. Established by the Class of 1929 on the occasion of their fortieth anniversary, the scholarships in the amount of $1260 are to be awarded annually to entering students or students already enrolled in the School of Music who, in the opinion of the University, have given evidence of outstanding academic ability and musical talent.

The Class of 1941 Entrance Scholarships were established by that class in 1981. Two renewable entrance scholarships of $1840 are available every third or fourth year to selected highly qualified entrants for up to four years.

The Class of 1951 Scholarship is the interest on a fund established by the Class of 1951 which is awarded as a renewable entrance scholarship every third or fourth year. Preference will be given to a student with a disability as defined by the Canadian Rehabilitation Council for the Disabled.

The Class of 1954 Scholarship provides approximately $1595 to a superior student who has completed at least one year of study at Acadia. Funds for the scholarship were provided by the Class of 1954. The scholarship is awarded annually on a non renewable basis.

Class of 1959 Memorial Entrance Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Entering first year

The Class of 1959 Memorial Entrance Scholarship is awarded annually up to the amount of full tuition, to an entering student who is a direct descendant of an undergraduate member of the Class of 1959 in the context of child to parent to grandparent and so on. If there is no eligible descendent of the Class of 1959, the scholarship is open to any student demonstrating academic excellence. There will be only one award per year and preference will be given to a student studying at the undergraduate level.

Class of 1969 Dr. L. J. (Jim) Retallack Memorial Scholarship

The Class of 1969 Dr. L. J. (Jim) Retallack Memorial Scholarship was established by the Class of 1969 in memory of their deceased class members and renamed in 2019 in memory of Class Life President Jim Retallack. It is awarded annually to a second-year student based on academic achievement who is not in receipt of other university scholarship support.

The Clifford Wilson Scholarship is awarded annually to students in the Faculty of Arts majoring in History and/or English.

Colpitts Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Arts, Pure and Applied Science, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

The Colpitts Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a student registered in the third or fourth year of a program leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. The recipient will have demonstrated high academic achievement and qualities of leadership and personal integrity. Preference will be given to those interested in pursuing careers in human services and who have demonstrated financial need. The scholarship is made possible through the thoughtful generosity of Athena Bell Colpitts and Reverend Robert Alder Colpitts, who both graduated from Acadia in 1934.

Constance Hayward Scholarships in History

Scholarship | Eligibility: Arts, History, Current 4th year

The Constance Hayward Scholarships in History are awarded annually to students studying toward honours degrees in history. For students entering the final year of a program, funds may be accessed for the spring or summer and ensuing academic year. The scholarships are provided from the estate of Miss Constance Hayward (B.A., Acadia '27). Miss Hayward was a member of Acadia's Board of Governors from 1969-1982. The scholarships were previously available to students enrolled in graduate programs in history.

Corkum Scholarships in Physics

Scholarship of up to $10,000 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Physics, Entering first year

Established in 2019 by Paul (’65) and Nadja (’66) Corkum. To be awarded on the basis of academic achievement to entering students majoring in Physics in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science, and renewable for three subsequent years contingent on academic performance. One new scholarship will be offered every second year. Value: up to $10,000

The Creaser/Margeson Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an entering or returning student participating in varsity athletics at Acadia. Preference may be given to a student entering a program in business, computer science, or economics.
