Scholarships & Financial Assistance


With education costs on the rise, enhancing student assistance is a top priority for Acadia. Each year, we award more than $4 million to students in the form of scholarships, scholar-bursaries, bursaries, awards, and prizes. By maintaining a strong scholarship and financial assistance program, we are able to attract, retain and support our students.

As a donor to scholarships and financial assistance, you can direct your gift toward: general award funds or awards for specific departments, faculties, research, or athletic teams; any existing named awards; or you can create a personal legacy by establishing a named award yourself. By supporting scholarships and financial assistance, you can help to ensure access to all of the rewards of an Acadia education.

Robert C. Swim Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Entering first year, Nova Scotia

The Robert C. Swim Memorial Scholarship ($140) is provided through the generosity of his wife, Ola Swim. The scholarship is awarded annually to a worthy student entering Acadia from West Kings District High school. Robert Swim (B.A. Acadia, 1926; M.A., 1940) spent many years serving the youth of Nova Scotia through the high schools and YMCAs as teacher and administrator.

Robert Simpson Laurence and Gwendolyn Cameron Laurence Scholar-Bursary

Scholar-Bursary | Eligibility: Nova Scotia

The Robert Simpson Laurence and Gwendolyn Cameron Laurence Scholar-Bursary This scholar-bursary is to by awarded to a needy first year student who has demonstrated extra-curricular interest and achievement (athletic or otherwise) or has a record of community service. The scholar-bursary is renewable for up to three years. Preference will be given to a student from Cobequid Education Centre in Truro, Nova Scotia. The scholar-bursary was established in 1997 by the Laurence family in honour of Robert Simpson Laurence (Acadia '34) and Gwendolyn Cameron Laurence (Acadia '32)

Ron E. and Barbara A. Nickerson Scholar-Bursary

Scholar-Bursary | Eligibility: Nova Scotia

The Ron E. and Barbara A. Nickerson Scholar-Bursary is awarded annually to an entering student. The award is made on the basis of financial need and academic performance, with preference given to a student from Queens County or Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia respectively. In the event that there are no eligible candidates, the award will be made to any worthy student from Nova Scotia. This endowed scholar-bursary was established in 2005 by Barbara A. Nickerson, in memory of her husband Ron (BA'49).

Ronald E. and Beverly A. Smith Scholar-Bursary

Scholar-Bursary | Eligibility: Nova Scotia

The Ronald E. and Beverly A Smith Scholar-Bursary is awarded on a renewable basis to entering or returning students on the basis of financial need and academic performance. Preference will be given to students from Yarmouth County who have demonstrated the qualities and potential required to be effective leaders.

This scholar-bursary has been funded by Ronald E. Smith (BBA Acadia 1971) and Beverly (Cottreau) Smith. Both are graduates of Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School.
