Scholarships & Financial Assistance


With education costs on the rise, enhancing student assistance is a top priority for Acadia. Each year, we award more than $4 million to students in the form of scholarships, scholar-bursaries, bursaries, awards, and prizes. By maintaining a strong scholarship and financial assistance program, we are able to attract, retain and support our students.

As a donor to scholarships and financial assistance, you can direct your gift toward: general award funds or awards for specific departments, faculties, research, or athletic teams; any existing named awards; or you can create a personal legacy by establishing a named award yourself. By supporting scholarships and financial assistance, you can help to ensure access to all of the rewards of an Acadia education.

Vere Karsdale Mason Scholarship

Scholarship of up to $120 | Eligibility: Athletics

The Vere Karsdale Mason Scholarship. An annual award provided to honour Vere Karsdale Mason, Rhodes Scholar, who graduated from Acadia in 1914 with honours in four subjects and an "A" in athletics. He fell in action in August 1916. The winner shall be a student who has completed the first year and who combines academic achievement with citizenship and sporting behaviour. Preference shall be given to a student from a farming community.

Victor E. Gould Memorial Prize in Biology

Prize | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Biology, Current 2nd year

The Victor E. Gould Memorial Prize in Biology. An annual prize endowed by the late Mrs. Carrie E. Gould of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, in memory of her son, the late Victor E. Gould (Acadia, '31), is awarded at the end of the second year to a student majoring in biology (preferably vertebrate zoology) who intends to take postgraduate work in that subject at a Canadian university.

Victor W. Sutherland Scholar-Bursary

Scholar-Bursary | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Pure and Applied Science, Nova Scotia

The Victor W. Sutherland Scholar-Bursary is awarded annually to a student entering the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Business Administration degree program. Preference will be given to a student from the Cobequid Educational Center and/or Truro, Nova Scotia. This scholar-bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need and academic performance to a student who demonstrates leadership in extra-curricular life and/or community service. This scholar-bursary is made possible through the generosity of Victor W. Sutherland (Acadia '56, BSc Geo) of Calgary, Alberta.

Victoria Harwood Excellence Awards

Award | Eligibility: Athletics

Established by Victoria Lanyon Harwood in 2007, these awards recognize and give support to women student athletes who demonstrate excellence in both athletics and academics. Victoria Harwood ('80), a varsity athlete graduated with a BA degree from Acadia University as a Dean's List Scholar and a winner of the Hugh A. Nobel Award. She received her MBA from Dalhousie University and has been a partner of The Harwood Group ScotiaMcLeod Inc. for the past 15 years. She has served on Acadia's Board of Governors, chaired the first Women in Sport Gala, and co-chaired the Athletics component of the Tides are Turning Campaign. No doubt Victoria's accomplishments in her profession, and as a volunteer and the mother of four daughters (two of whom are recent graduates of Acadia University) are what have inspired her to create the Victoria Harwood Excellence Awards.
