1996 University Cup Champions Men’s Hockey Award

This award was established in 2021 by members of the 1996 hockey Axemen. It is to be awarded to a returning men’s varsity hockey athlete who demonstrates leadership qualities on and off the ice, competitive spirit, community engagement, and is in good academic standing.

The recipient will be chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with head coach of the men’s varsity hockey program. The inaugural disbursement of funds will be for the 2021-2022 academic year. The 1995-1996 Acadia hockey Axemen captured Acadia’s second CIS hockey title in four years, with the ability to both steamroll the opposition and, when necessary, win the close games as well. The Axemen compiled a 19-6-1 regular-season record, then capped a 5-2 playoff run by edging the UPEI Panthers 7-6 in the deciding game of the conference final. At the University Cup in Toronto, Acadia edged Trois Rivieres 4-3 in the semi-final and Waterloo 3-2 in the final to win the national championship.
