The discovery within New Zealand of a very long transcurrent fault with huge displacement, isolated on all sides by deep ocean provided a geological conundrum prior to the new paradigm, Plate Tectonics. In fact, Harold Wellman’s work provided an impetus for this new explanation for how continental drift works. Living with these large faults has other effects, such as dealing with the devastating 2010-11 earthquake in Christchurch and future ones.
