What Lurks in Your Genome? Exploring some aspects of genome evolution

October 26, 2017 (12:00 pm - 1:00 pm)

Location: Acadia Art Gallery

In this week's Lunchtime Learning Series session, we're joined by Dr. Marlene Snyder, recently retired from the Biology Department.

The Art Gallery is the appropriate place to hold this talk, we will begin with the modern approach for observing chromosomes known as ‘Chromosome Painting’. The technique produces some visually beautiful images while also providing an important tool for genetic counselling and for current approaches to understanding cancer. We will also discuss how the Human Genome Project—the work that has given us nearly the complete sequence of the 3 billion bases of human DNA—has given us the ability to reconstruct some of the events that have occurred in our own evolutionary history—from broken chromosomes to invasions by virus DNA.

This event is free to students, members of the public, faculty, and staff.
