Funds for the Food Cupboard Event Raises $2,000 In Support of the On-Campus Student-Run Foodbank

ASU, Chartwells, and Food Cupboard representatives gather to celebrate the fundraising achievement

Wolfville, NS, December 12, 2018 -- On Saturday, November 3rd Chartwells at Acadia University, the Acadia Students’ Union (ASU) and the ASU Food Cupboard held the first Funds for the Food Cupboard fundraising event, raising a total of $2,000 in support of the on-campus student-run foodbank, the Food Cupboard. Chartwells matched all funds raised.

"The Funds for the Food Cupboard event held at the Axe Bar and Grill was a great success,” said Caitlin Sanderson, ASU Food Cupboard Coordinator. “This event was not only about raising money but it also started the conversation of student food insecurity here at Acadia University. By holding and participating in events such as this one, we can work together to build and support a community that is food secure.”

As part of Chartwells’ WE Partnership, a unique opportunity to attend WE Day Ottawa was offered as grand prize for the fundraiser. The trip for two was won by Kasey Newell, a 4th year student at Acadia University. Kasey had attended WE Day Halifax when she was in high school and was well acquainted with WE’s focus on food security in developing countries. When asked about winning the WE Day Ottawa experience she said, “I was so happy and grateful to be the winner of this experience! I was in shock and couldn’t believe that I had won.” Kasey and a friend received travel, accommodations as well as $500 spending money.

“In 2015, Dr. Lesley Frank a professor at Acadia University conducted research on the prevalence of food insecurity within the student population. She concluded that approximately 38% of Acadia students felt some level of food insecurity within that year,” said Caitlin. George Philp, President of the Acadia Students’ Union, stated “The ASU is so happy to work with all partners on campus, including Chartwells, to enhance student supports on campus, including the ASU Food Cupboard. We thank Chartwells for their continued support for Acadia Students.”

As part of their ongoing support, beginning January 7th, 2019, Chartwells will be launching Coffee for a Cause days which will occur once a month to raise money for social causes on campus and in the Wolfville community. During these specific days a portion of the coffee sales on campus will be donated back to organizations such as the Food Cupboard and the Acadia S.M.I.L.E. program.
