Order of Canada honours for Acadia alumni
Acadia University honorary degree recipient, the Honourable Justice Dr. Murray Sinclair (DCL '21), C.C., has been named a Companion of the Order of Canada. He was honoured for his commitment to representing Indigenous legal issues and his dedication to reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians.
Sinclair has had an accomplished career that includes being Manitoba's first Indigenous judge. He was the former chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and recently retired from the Canadian Senate. Sinclair has received honorary doctorates from 14 universities, including Acadia, in 2021. He currently serves as general counsel to Manitoba's largest Indigenous law firm, Cochrane Saxberg LLP. He is the Chancellor at Queen's University.
Sinclair was one of 135 appointments to the Order of Canada, announced Wednesday, December 29 by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada.
Order of Canada Officer appointees from the Acadia community includes Acadia alumna Dr. Patricia Livingston ('11), O.C., and honorary degree recipient Dr. Connie J. Eaves, O.C.
Dr. Patricia Livingston ('11) was honoured for her contributions to global health and anesthesia safety and her commitment to improving medical education in underserved communities around the world. Dr. Livingston holds a Master of Education from Acadia and is an Associate Professor of Anesthesia and Medical Director of Global Health in the Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine at Dalhousie University. She is also a well-respected anesthesiologist at the QEII Health Sciences Centre at Nova Scotia Health.
Acadia honorary degree recipient Dr. Connie J. Eaves, (DSc ‘20) O.C., was recognized for advancing our understanding of cancer development and leadership both nationally and internationally in stem-cell biology. She was a 2019 inductee into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame for her work on stem-cell research with translational impact on bone-marrow transplant treatments for leukemia and breast cancer, which impacted internationally. Dr. Eaves is a professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia and a Distinguished Scientist at the Terry Fox Laboratory. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from Acadia in 2020.
The Order of Canada is one of the country's highest civilian honours, recognizing those with outstanding achievements who are dedicated to shaping their communities, taking an innovative approach to their work, and who aspire to serve the nation.
