Sara Baxter awarded the Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies

Fourth year Acadia University business student, Sara Baxter, has been named one of eight recipients of the Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies for the 2017/2018 academic year. The awards, valued at $25,000 each, are given out annually to business students studying at an Atlantic Canadian University. Criteria for the award include academic excellence, extracurricular and community involvement, and entrepreneurial interest.

“There are so many deserving candidates for this award, and I am absolutely honoured to be selected as a recipient,” says Baxter.  “I have loved every minute of my time spent at Acadia, and knowing that my involvement here has helped shaped me into the person I am is truly a testament to the culture and sense of community in Wolfville. This scholarship has opened so many doors for me, and I am extremely excited to see where I go next.”

Baxter, is a Dean’s List scholar, a three-time Academic All Canadian, and the recipient of a number of scholarships including: The F.C. Manning School of Business Advisory Board Impact Award, the Dr. Lalia B. Chase Scholarship, the Acadie Vie/Acadia Life Scholarship, Fidelity Investments Scholar-Bursary, Winston Steeves Memorial Scholarship in Business, and the Lad Javorek Memorial Award, all testaments to her academic prowess.

Outside of the classroom, Baxter is involved in a number of clubs, societies and organizations. She is member of the Acadia Women’s Varsity Rugby team, the Co-President of the Acadia Players’ Association, Vice President of Marketing for the Business Society, and Co-Project Manager for Enactus Acadia. Baxter also works as a contributor for Acadia Athletics, writing articles that profile different athletes on campus, and as the Digital Marketing Coordinator for the School of Business.

Paul Callaghan, Director of the F.C. Manning School of Business, has both taught and worked with Baxter and has seen first-hand her commitment to her education and community. “As a School, we are very proud that Sara has been awarded a Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies, the most prestigious award for business students in Atlantic Canada,” says Callaghan. “During her time at Acadia, Sara has not only excelled academically, but she has also been highly engaged in a wide variety of activities on campus. Having had the pleasure of teaching and working with Sara, I would say she indeed embodies the entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to community the Frank H. Sobey Award honours.”

It was Callaghan, who had the pleasure of informing Baxter of her win.  “Paul sent me an email asking me to come and talk to him about some of the work I was doing as the digital marketing coordinator for the School of Business,” Baxter says. “He lied,” she added. “When I got there he handed me a letter and told me the news. I couldn’t have been more excited to hear it from him.”

Baxter credits the University's small size and excellent caliber of professors for helping her achieve her goals. “As soon as I stepped on campus I knew this is where I needed to go to school. The sense of community and connection that Acadia has is incredible,” she says.  “My professors all know me by name, and make an effort to know me as an individual and know what I want to do.”

After school, Baxter plans to attend graduate school and pursue a JD/MBA, with hopes of becoming a corporate lawyer.
