Acadia University and the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre continue their commitment to nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders by hosting the annual Nova Scotia Envirothon. This program brings together high school students from grades 9-12 for a unique hands-on learning experience in environmental conservation.
“Above all else, the Nova Scotia Envirothon program demonstrates the importance of interdisciplinary skill-sharing and collaborative learning when it comes to the environment,” says Sarah Lavallee. A 2022 Community Development with Environmental Sustainability Studies graduate, Lavallee coordinated the 2023 Envirothon in Wolfville. “We hope that student participants come away from the experience with a renewed sense of their connection with the natural world and their ability to contribute to a more sustainable future.”

Focusing on key S.T.E.M. areas, the Nova Scotia Envirothon encourages young minds to explore forestry, wildlife, aquatics, soils and land use, and current environmental issues. Participants benefit from the expertise of local professionals who provide field training and guidance throughout this exciting competition.
Each year, high school teams from across the province compete for the title of provincial Envirothon champions. The winning team earns a prestigious place in the North American Envirothon competition, further strengthening their environmental skills and knowledge. The 2023 event, hosted on the Wolfville campus saw the winning team, Cobequid Educational Centre Team A, participate at the North American Envirothon in New Brunswick.
The Nova Scotia Envirothon fosters a supportive learning environment where students experience Acadia's campus through two action-packed days of outdoor exploration, field tests, presentations, and collaborative team-building activities. This immersive program aims to inspire future leaders in environmental stewardship by equipping them with essential skills, knowledge, and experiences.
