Introduction to Business

Introduces students to various structures of business, industry, and organizations, the influence of external factors on organizations, the interrelationship with society, the functional areas of business, and the role of managers. This is done from a historical perspective, understanding how business and our market system have developed over time, and how philosophies and ideologies have influenced businesses development.

This course will provide you an overview of doing business in Canada by exploring the functional areas of both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.

Topics include:

  • The managerial process (decision making, forms of organizations, leadership)
  • Strategic planning (including ethical issues and stakeholders)
  • Using online databases for research
  • Developing analytical skills and using tools like SWOT analysis

You'll develop an understanding of frameworks (ethics), functional areas (accounting, finance, marketing, management), and support areas (human resources, operations, laws) of business.
