This course covers the classic period or golden age of American Literature. It was long thought, even by Americans themselves, that significant original literature had not been and could not be created in the USA. Many forces worked against the emergence of a fresh and original American Literature, and in this course you will study the emergence of a distinctly American canon of literature despite the odds.
