Scholarships & Financial Assistance


With education costs on the rise, enhancing student assistance is a top priority for Acadia. Each year, we award more than $4 million to students in the form of scholarships, scholar-bursaries, bursaries, awards, and prizes. By maintaining a strong scholarship and financial assistance program, we are able to attract, retain and support our students.

As a donor to scholarships and financial assistance, you can direct your gift toward: general award funds or awards for specific departments, faculties, research, or athletic teams; any existing named awards; or you can create a personal legacy by establishing a named award yourself. By supporting scholarships and financial assistance, you can help to ensure access to all of the rewards of an Acadia education.

Dr. Alex Wright Memorial Award

Award | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Community Development, Kinesiology, Current 4th year

The Dr. Alex Wright Memorial Award is awarded annually to a graduating student from each of the Kinesiology and Community Development programs who best exemplify energy and enthusiasm for learning, coupled with inquiring minds, and who demonstrate creative thinking, analytical reasoning, and effective communication skills. The award was established in 1997 in memory of Dr. Alex Wright by his graduating students, staff, friends and family.

Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Ernest Barss Bursaries

Bursary | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Community Development, Kinesiology, Current 1st year, International student

The Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Ernest Barss Bursaries. These have been endowed by Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Ernest Barss of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and provide $573 to each of four first year students from the United States on the grounds of sporting behaviour, leadership, academic standing and need. The awards are to be made by the Bursary Committee on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Kinesiology and the Head of the Department of Community Development.

Dr. Hugh A. Noble Prize in Kinesiology

Prize | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Kinesiology, Current 4th year

The Dr. Hugh A. Noble Prize in Kinesiology was donated by Dr. Hugh A. Noble to be awarded on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology to an outstanding member in the graduating class who has demonstrated high academic ability, citizenship and sporting behaviour throughout their years of study.

Dr. Jack and Fanor Hilton and Sons Foundation Football Bursary

Bursary | Eligibility: Athletics, Professional Studies, Pure and Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Kinesiology

Established in 2023 by the Dr. Jack and Fanor Hilton and Sons Foundation. To be awarded annually to a men's football athlete enrolled in biology, chemistry or kinesiology who demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to a student enrolled in biology and/or chemistry. Further preference will be given to a student who expresses an interest in pursuing a career in medicine. The recipient will be chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the football head coach and applicable Faculty Dean. Upon the confirmation, it is the wish of the donor to connect with the successful recipient to provide support and guidance.

Dr. Jim MacLeod Scholarship in Kinesiology

Scholarship | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Kinesiology, Current 3rd year

The Dr. Jim MacLeod Scholarship in Kinesiology is awarded annually to a student entering their graduating year at Acadia in the Sport Injury Assessment and Management area within the Bachelor of Kinesiology program. The recipient will be chosen based on equal consideration of an individual who demonstrates energy and enthusiasm for learning, coupled with high academic achievement, effective communication skills and a genuine interest in the well being of those around them, inside and outside the academic setting. The recipient will be chosen by a selection committee, chaired by the Director of the School of Kinesiology.

This scholarship was established in September of 2006 to honor Dr. Jim MacLeod, Acadia Professor and Head Athletic Therapist, by his graduating students within the Sports Injury Assessment and Management area of the program.
