Off-campus Housing

Living in Wolfville

We love this town! You will too.

Acadia is located in the small town of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, and most students live within 2 kilometers of campus. Wolfville is a vibrant town, and we encourage you to be part of the community and explore the local area.

There are several communities with rentals located nearby, such as Kentville, New Minas, and Coldbrook. There is limited transit service to these locations. Many students who live outside of Wolfville rely on a car.

When searching for an apartment, consider:

Cost

Rents will vary depending on the apartment's location, age, condition, amenities (ex. private laundry, balcony, storage), and whether utilities are included. If the rent does not include utilities such as electricity and internet, consider what the total monthly cost will be once you add them.

Location

Consider whether the apartment is within convenient walking or biking distance to campus. If not, is there a convenient bus route, or is it a short drive by car? If you have a car, confirm that legal, designated parking is available.

Parking

The Town of Wolfville has all-day public parking areas that are designated by signs near the business core of the Town. All other parking is time restricted, designated by signs. There is no public overnight parking in the town, with the exception of some areas of on-street parking between April 1st until November 30th.

In winter months, the Town implements winter parking regulations. Wolfville does not permit street parking from December through March. However, you may purchase an Acadia parking pass and park your vehicle on-campus during these months or all year if needed.

Utilities

Typical utility costs (estimates only):

Expense Average/approximate cost
Electricity/home heating $100-150 per month (varies based on consumption and method of heat)
Basic smartphone (plan only) $55-85 per month
High speed internet $80-110 per month
TV, internet, and home phone bundles $170-215 per month

  • Some utilities, such as electricity, charge a one-time connection fee.
  • You should set up your account with Nova Scotia Power 7-10 days in advance.
  • There are several providers available for telephone, internet, and television, such as BellAliant, EastLink, and Purple Cow (internet only). Many providers offer discounts or promotions for students.

Let's Talk Trash

Be sure to talk to your landlord about waste management. Waste must be sorted into categories: recyclables, compostable, and garbage. Sorting is mandatory, even in apartment buildings.

  • Garbage must be disposed of in clear transparent bags. One dark/solid colored bag for items of a personal nature is acceptable at each collection.
  • Recycling goes into blue bags. Separate paper and plastic into different bags.
  • Compost is collected in green bins.

Garbage not sorted properly will be tagged and left at roadside for you to re-sort for the next garbage collection day.
