Acadia Students Launch Food Drive for Local Food Bank
Acadia University students will take to the street of Wolfville on March 19th and 26th in a food and fundraising drive called March Against Hunger. The event is being organized by the Acadia chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), an international organization that promotes student engagement in business and social ventures, and is receiving significant support from the Mud Creek Rotary Club and several local Wolfville businesses.
“Acadia students are genuinely concerned about the big problems our community is facing,” said William Roberts, SIFE vice-president and March Against Hunger organizer. “These include global issues, like the privatization of water, but also local issues such as poverty and hunger. Acadia students are in an ideal situation to help our neighbours who need a little assistance from our local food bank to lead healthy, productive lives or to provide basic necessities to their children so they can attend school and further their education. The support we’ve received from members of the Rotary Club and many local business people has been amazing. We’re hoping for a big turnout and generous support.”
Acadia students will be dropping notices on the doorsteps of Wolfville residents beginning this week. The notices will tell residents when the students will return for donations of non-perishable food, personal hygiene products or cash. Students will collect donations on either Friday, March 18th or Saturday, March 26th. In addition, baskets for donation will be placed in Cochrane’s Pharmasave and Wolfville Save-Easy from March 16th to March 31st. Mud Creek Rotary Club members have been canvassing local businesses for support and will drive the vehicles that will transport the students and donated food.
All donations will be given to the Wolfville and Area Food Bank.
