Acadia University political science student Emma Cochrane ('13) and sociology student Stephanie Chapman ('12) were the 2012 winners of the Canadian Federation of University Women Wolfville Award for their outstanding contributions to the Acadia community.

The pair created the student group, Acadia Students for Enthusiastic Consent, to raise awareness about sexual assault. Together, Cochrane and Chapman hosted an information session for more than 60 students and faculty to discuss better ways to address the issue. In addition to an informational two-page Valentine’s Day centre-spread in the student newspaper, the pair worked with Acadia’s Safety and Security, and Equity offices to create an updated informational brochure and website.

Next year, the students plan to work in cooperation with Acadia’s Women’s Centre to develop an ad campaign that spreads the word – “enthusiastic consent is the only consent.”

The objective of the $1,500 scholarship is to recognize excellence in Women's and Gender Studies and to give students the opportunity to showcase their work. Applicants were invited to submit a scholarly project on a topic related to Women's and Gender Studies. Students from any discipline were invited to apply.
