Students across all faculties invited to converge at newly renovated space offering study help, socializing, and snacks
Join us for the Open House on November 7

Room 130 in Huggins Science Hall, also known as “the Math Lounge” and home to the Math and Stats Help (MASH) Centre, now features a winning formula to meet the needs of Acadia students across campus: the newly renovated lounge is inviting, relaxing, modern—and snack-friendly. The aim is to create a space where students can connect, regulate, and access student support services.
“This upgrade just makes sense,” says Dr. Richard Karsten, head of the Math Department. “We are accessibly located on the first floor of Huggins, and we’re already servicing students from across all disciplines. Why not also provide a kitchen stocked with local food?”
For the team in the math department, it all adds up.
Over the past few years, there has been a growing number of Acadia students who are looking for math and stats help, explains Dr. Karsten. The MASH Centre, which provides free peer-tutoring for students in any program, has witnessed an influx of students who missed core math components in high school during the COVID years. This has made the Acadia Math Lounge a bit of a hub for students across every faculty.
The team behind the renovation saw this as an opportunity to also make it easier for students to access healthy, local food, especially on days when their schedules are busy and they need to come by for tutoring. Thanks to a grant from the EKM Health Foundation, the Math Lounge now includes a fully accessible kitchen complete with appliances and supplies that are available to all students. The plan is to partner with a variety of farmers and organizations to keep a stocked fridge and cupboard where students can access, prepare, or store food. To get things started, Eisses Farms has been providing apples for the past year. They believe there’s additional opportunities to connect with other groups on campus, particularly those working to improve food security among students in need.
