Alumnus makes sure Bahamian roofs stand strong

Acadia alumnus Guilden Gilbert (’90) owns and operates Innovative Building Systems (Bahamas) Ltd., a Bahamas-based, incorporated construction and construction material supply company. Gilbert was born and raised in Bermuda, but moved to the Bahamas in 1997, six years after marrying Bahamian and Acadia alumna Sandra Barry (’93).

Weather in the Caribbean can be challenging and quite destructive at times and Gilbert noted that asphalt roofs, common in the region, generally suffered damage when hurricanes and other extreme weather events rolled in.

He noticed also that the insurance market gave discounted premiums to people with Bermudian-style roofs because they were considered to be more durable. The rest, as they say, is history. Gilbert launched The Bermuda Roof 12 years ago and is now looking to expand into other Caribbean islands with a product that is designed specifically for a tropical climate.
