Heartwarming, emotional evening at Halifax Holiday Reception

The weather outside was frightful, but the atmosphere inside Office Interiors in Dartmouth at the Halifax Holiday Reception for Acadia alumni and friends on Thursday, December 5 was simply delightful.

More than 70 guests braved rainy, stormy conditions to share some Acadia spirit and enjoy fine food and great conversation, creating plenty of warmth and energy throughout the evening.

They also honoured Bruce Phinney (’81), this year’s recipient of the Acadia Alumni Isaac Chipman Award for Excellence in Alumni Service. The award was presented by Alumni Association Awards Committee Chair, Moira MacLean (’85).

A dynamic personality, Phinney embodied the spirit and intention of Acadia University’s mandate and values. He was a fierce advocate for countless students, serving Acadia administration, alumni, faculty and staff with verve, intelligence, and insight. He bled Acadia red and blue, and the University was his heart and soul. The presentation of the Excellence in Alumni Service Award to Phinney’s wife Gretchen and daughter Evan (’16) was certainly the highlight of the night.

Both were emotional in accepting the award. Evan spoke of her father’s generous and thoughtful nature, and Gretchen acknowledged the many friends, Board members and alumni in the room, thanking them for their kindness and support.

A standing ovation ensued, commemorating one of Acadia’s most ardent supporters, and showing once again the incredible cohesion and vitality that is so characteristic of the Acadia community.
