Case Management

The Case Manager helps students access support services within Acadia and in the community so that students can succeed inside and outside the classroom.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to know where to turn for support. Our Case Manager is a trained social worker who can guide you to the right support services both on- and off-campus. They can also assist you with managing issues like:

  • complex mental health referrals
  • finances
  • housing
  • food insecurity
  • support navigating resources on- and off-campus

A Case Manager is different from a mental health counsellor. A counsellor provides therapy and can help you to process and manage difficult emotions, while a Case Manager focuses on connecting you with resources to solve problems and on helping you to develop plans. This is based on the social determinants of health.

For example, if you are experiencing distress over financial issues that are affecting your life and your studies, the Case Manager can help you work on steps to improve your situation. This could include connecting you with resources at Acadia (ex. Counselling Centre, Financial Aid) and in the local community (ex. a support group for gambling, financial planning, government social supports).

Confidentiality and privacy are extremely important in Case Management to ensure safety and trust with students, faculty, and staff.

Faculty and Staff

If a student would benefit from support but you're unsure where to turn or how to get assistance for them, you can make a direct referral by completing our form. Please notify the student that you will be making a referral, and expect for the Case Manager to reach out to them in 1-2 business days to arrange for a consult.

The Case Manager is also available to faculty and staff to develop strategies and plans for students who have been observed demonstrating concerning behaviour in class or common areas on campus. Case Managers do holistic assessment and develop plans to ensure student success. The process depends on the complexity of student, faculty, or staff needs.
