On Thursday, February 1, the Acadia University School of Music Concert & Lecture Series presents “Singing IN Flanders Fields: Canadian Musical Settings of an Iconic Poem” – a presentation by Michelle Boyd with Paula Rockwell and the Acadia University Singers.   

In this lecture-recital, Michelle will discuss the musical legacy of one of Canada’s most famous literary works, Lt. Col. John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields”.  With performances by Paula and members of the Acadia University Singers of compositions ranging from 1917 to 2020, this presentation will illustrate how our cultural understanding and interpretation of this poignant text has changed from the WWI era to our present day.

The research presented in this lecture-recital initiated the Singing IN Flanders Fields Project – a performance/research trip that will enable members of the Acadia University Singers to perform at the WWI battlefields in France and Belgium (including Vimy Ridge and the region of Belgium known as “Flanders Fields) this spring.  Originally scheduled for the spring of 2020, the choir’s visit to Ypres will fall on the 109th anniversary of the composition of McCrae’s famous poem.  Student participation in this project has been made possible by a Harrison McCain Emerging Scholar Award, an Acadia University Research Fund grant, an SSHRC Institutional grant, an Arts Nova Scotia Award and a SOCAN grant, plus through the generous support of donors.
