On September 30th, Acadia University will be partnering with Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey (a body that oversees education on behalf of the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia) and the Town of Wolfville to provide our community with different opportunities to observe, listen, learn, support, and act in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a time for Canadians to honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools. It coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which is an Indigenous-led campaign to raise awareness of the multilayered and ongoing impacts of colonialism, including but not limited to residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”.

Several Indigenous community members will be generously sharing their perspectives, talents, and culture throughout the day:

• The morning starts at 8:00am in Clock Park as Acadia students raise the tipi under the guidance of Elder Dr. Joe Michael. This is immediately followed by an opening ceremony led by Elder Dr. Lorraine Whitman.
• Several keynote talks and speaker series will then take place at Festival Theatre where different lived experiences and topics will be shared and explored.
• We’ll also be treated to a day-long Indigenous arts and crafts showcase and sale at Festival Theatre.
• At 5:00pm, the day will culminate with a closing ceremony in Clock Park and Mi’kmaw “soup and sides” at the Wolfville Farmers’ Market.
