Sociology of Aging
An introduction to aging in light of sociological theories and current research; comparative analysis of aging in traditional and industrialized societies, with an emphasis on Canadian society.

Prerequisites: 6 credit hours from SOCI 1006, 1106 or 6 hours from 1013/1023/1033/1113 or equivalent. SOCI 2343 is open to those registered in the Health Sciences Option without the usual prerequisites.

In this course, you'll explore the sociological implications of Canada's steadily increasing population of persons aged 65 and over.
Topics include:
- Social theories of aging
- Institutionalization of the aged
- Retirement, role loss, and the loss of a partner
- Negative stereotypes
You'll build your understanding through an interesting mix of tasks that includes research, interviewing an older person, and reviewing literature.
