With education costs on the rise, enhancing student assistance is a top priority for Acadia. Each year, we award more than $4 million to students in the form of scholarships, scholar-bursaries, bursaries, awards, and prizes. By maintaining a strong scholarship and financial assistance program, we are able to attract, retain and support our students.

E. A. Collins Award in Music-Composition

Award of up to $415 | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Music, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

The E. A. Collins Award in Music-Composition ($415) is funded from gifts provided by friends and former students of the first Dean of the School of Music. The award is made annually to a promising and deserving student in music composition on recommendation of the School of Music faculty.

E. Belle Lynds Scholarship

Scholarship of up to $2,840 | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Education, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year

The E. Belle Lynds Scholarship is awarded annually to a student registered in the Bachelor of Education program. Eligible candidates are recommended by the Director of the School of Education. The scholarship is funded directly from the Estate of the late Margaret R. Lynds (M.A. (Hon.) Acadia, 1947) of Moncton, New Brunswick, an outstanding teacher of public speech.

E. Blanche Thomas History Prize

Prize of up to $80 | Eligibility: Arts, History, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

The E. Blanche Thomas History Prize. An endowed prize of $80 bequeathed by Miss E. Blanche Thomas (Acadia, 1914) is awarded annually on nomination of the Department of History to the honours student in history with the highest overall academic record

E. Douglas Craig Memorial Bursaries

Bursary | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Education, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year

The E. Douglas Craig Memorial Bursaries are awarded annually to two students in the Bachelor of Education program at Acadia University who exhibits financial need. Preference will be given to students from Nova Scotia.

The endowed bursary was established in 2007 by The John and Judy Bragg Family Foundation, in consultation with the Craig Family, to honour Evan Douglas Craig (BA Acadia 1947; BED Acadia 1948; MA Acadia 1949), an Acadia University graduate who had a positive impact on John Bragg as a teacher and principal at Oxford High School.

E. Douglas Craig Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Education, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year

The E. Douglas Craig Scholarship is awarded annually to a student in the School of Education at Acadia University. Preference will be given to students from Nova Scotia.

This scholarship has been established by Mr. Craig’s family as a memorial to him. Evan Douglas Craig (BA, BED, MA, Acadia 1947, 1948, 1949) received many honours for his leadership on both the varsity football and hockey teams. He was inducted into Acadia’s Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995. He devoted his career to the education of young Nova Scotians with enthusiasm for the nurturing of young minds and respect for all.

E. Murray Mosher Bursary

Bursary | Eligibility: Entering first year

The E. Murray Mosher Bursary will be awarded on a renewable basis to an Acadia student with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to an entering student from Queens County, Nova Scotia. If there are no eligible students from Queens County, it may be awarded to any eligible student from Nova Scotia enrolled in the Certificate of Applied Science Program.

This award was established by Margaret Mosher in 2009 in memory of her husband, E. Murray Mosher (BSC Acadia 1944).

Earle and Elsie Hawkesworth Bursary in Education

Bursary | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Education, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year

The Earle and Elsie Hawkesworth Bursary in Education is awarded annually on the recommendation of the School of Education to an entering or returning student in the Bachelor of Education degree program who aspires to a teaching career. The bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement. The bursary is made possible through the generosity of Earle (B.A. Acadia '44; B.D. '47; B.Ed. '58; Hon D.Ed. '79) and Elsie (Acadia '50) Hawkesworth of Edmonton, Alberta. Dr. Hawkesworth, former Deputy Minister of Education for the Province of Alberta, and Elsie Hawkesworth were both teachers who served many years in the field of education.

Ed Arsenault Memorial Scholar-Bursary

Scholar-Bursary of up to $2,000 | Eligibility: Arts, Professional Studies, Pure and Applied Science

Established in 2015 by the Arsenault and Curry families in memory of an extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather, the Ed Arsenault Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a full-time returning student from the Annapolis Valley in recognition of academic excellence and financial need. Ed Arsenault’s career was with the Royal Canadian Air Force and later, the Annapolis Valley School Board. He was a lifelong pursuer of education who received his Med from Acadia in 2007. Value: $2,000.

The Eddy Garron Award. To be awarded to a female student from South America, preferably Bolivia, who demonstrates school and community involvement. This award was established by Jim Mills (’82) in honour of his wife, Leilany Garron-Mills, and in memory of her father.

Edgar Delap Bent Memorial Scholarship in Physics

The Edgar Delap Bent Memorial Scholarship in Physics is awarded annually to a student or students enrolled in a program leading to a Bachelor of Science (Physics). The scholarship is provided by the estate of Doris G. Bent (BSH '29), in memory of her husband Edgar Delap Bent (BSc '28).

Edgar Emerson Eaton Scholarship

Scholarship

The Edgar Emerson Eaton Scholarship. Through the generosity of Mrs. Edgar Emerson Eaton of Elmhurst, New York, the Governors of Acadia University have received an endowed scholarship with an annual value of $200 in memory of her husband, the late Edgar Emerson Eaton, a man of rare character, poise and courage, and a student of versatile interests. Mr. Eaton was a native of Kings County, a former student of Acadia University, and son of David Rupert Eaton, a former Governor of the University. The income from the fund is to be awarded to that male student of Kings County, Nova Scotia, who, in the judgment of the faculty, gives evidence of worthy scholastic standing, fine personality and character.

Edith Freeman Raddall Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Entering first year, Nova Scotia

The Edith Freeman Raddall Scholarship is awarded annually to an entering well rounded student from Liverpool Regional High School on the basis of academic performance. Preference will be given to a student who intends to live in residence during their first year at Acadia. Preference will also be given to a student with demonstrated financial need. The endowed scholar-bursary was established in 2005 by Dr. Thomas H. Raddall (BSc Acadia 1957).

Edouard Massey French Language Bursary

Bursary of up to $1,270 | Eligibility: Arts, French, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

The Edouard Massey French Language Bursary is provided through the generosity of Mr. William C. Hankinson (B.A. Acadia, 1932; M.A. 1933) who was associated over many years with modern language teaching and broadcasting and was founder of the Maritime Concert Association and the Canadian Institute of Speech. The bursary is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of French to assist a third or fourth year student to attend a French language institution in Quebec or France for a French immersion program of at least six weeks duration. The bursary may apply for summer or regular academic year study.

Edward and Ella Levy Memorial Scholarships

Scholarship | Eligibility: Entering first year

The Edward and Ella Levy Memorial Scholarships. Two renewable entrance scholarships of $1480 each are available to Atlantic Canada and New England States students. At least one of the two recipients must be in the Faculty of Arts. The scholarships are provided from the Estate of Dr. George Edward Levy (1902 '81), a devoted pastor, teacher and scholar, B.A. Acadia, 1927; M.A. (Th.), 1931; B.D., 1932; D.Th. Union Theological College, Montreal, 1940. Dr. Levy served on faculty at Acadia from 1947 to 1970.

Edward and Elma Lank Scholarship

Scholarship of up to $2,000 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Engineering, Nutrition

Established in 2018, the scholarship is awarded to a fulltime returning science student from Nova Scotia, preferably majoring in nutrition or engineering, in recognition of excellence in academics and extra curricular activities. Elma Layton ('47) from Truro and Edward Lank ('46) from Kingston NS lived in Arvida where Edward worked for Alcan. After the family had grown, Elma returned to education until she and Edward moved to Montreal. They also lived in Jamaica and Ireland before retiring to Kingston, ON. Two of their three children, Charlotte ('70) and Ben ('74) are also Acadia graduates and Charlotte is proudly the first second-generation Acadia home economics alumna. The Lank family are passionate about helping young people secure an education.

The Edward Manning Saunders Bursary established from the Estate of Mrs. Rida S. Moore in memory of her father, with an endowed income of $2090 is to be used for bursary aid to non theological students.

Edward Manning Saunders Scholarship in Arts

Scholarship | Eligibility: Arts

The Edward Manning Saunders Scholarship in Arts ($235), being half of the interest on an endowment set up by the late Hon. William Dennis of Halifax, Nova Scotia, is to be awarded to a student in Arts at the end of the third year. The selection is to be made by the Dean of Arts, the Chairperson of the scholarship committee, and the heads of the departments concerned. The scholarship will be applied on the fees of the senior year.

Edwin Borden Awards

Award of up to $14,000

Named in honour of Edwin Borden, an Acadia alumnus who was one of the first Black individuals in Canada to be granted a Bachelor’s (1892) and Master’s (1896), these awards will recognize community engagement and leadership among Black Acadia students. Borden was from Truro, Nova Scotia, and went on to earn a PhD and enjoy a distinguished career as a church leader and college president in the United States.

The Edwin Crowell Entrance Scholarship of $960 is a renewable entrance scholarship provided by the late Dr. Harvey E. Crowell (D.C.L. Acadia, 1956), Chairman of the Board of Governors, 1959 1973, in memory of his father.

Edyth and Ralph Dodds Scholar-Bursary

Scholar-Bursary | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Prince Edward Island

The Edyth and Ralph Dodds Scholar-Bursary is awarded annually to an entering or returning student from Prince Edward Island who is in a Bachelor of Science degree program with a major in biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics. If, in any year, there is no eligible candidate, consideration may be given to a student with a major in English or theology. Preference will be given to a student from Summerside, Prince Edward Island. In the event that there are no candidates from Prince Edward Island, the award may be granted to a student from any of the Maritime provinces. The scholar-bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need and academic performance.

Elinor Kyte-Senior Memorial Scholarship in History

The Elinor Kyte-Senior Memorial Scholarship in History. Established in 1989 by her family and friends, in memory of Elinor Kyte­Senior (1926 - 1989), a member of the Acadia Faculty 1986 - 87 and 1988 - 89. The scholarship is awarded to a student entering the second or subsequent year of a program leading to a major or honours degree in History. Preference shall be given to a student who has demonstrated a special interest and ability in Military History.

Elizabeth Cannon Swimming Awards

Award | Eligibility: Athletics

Established in 2019 by Dr. Elizabeth Cannon (’82, ’10), these awards are granted, on the recommendation of the Director of Athletics and the Coach of the varsity swim team, to female student-athletes who are members of the varsity swim team in recognition of academic and athletic excellence, and who may have financial need.

Elizabeth Cannon WISE Awards

Established in 2019 by Dr. Elizabeth Cannon (’82, ’10), these awards are granted, on the recommendation of the Dean of Science or designate, to female students majoring in science in recognition of academic excellence, involvement in Acadia’s WISE program, and preference may be given to financial need.

Elizabeth MacMillan Scholarship in Nutrition

The Elizabeth MacMillan Scholarship in Nutrition was established to honour Professor Elizabeth MacMillan (B.Sc. (H.Ec.) Acadia, 1931; M.S. Cornell, 1943; D.Sc. Acadia, 1970), Dean of the School from 1943-1971. It is awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition program on the recommendation of the Faculty of the School of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Ellen V. Piers Psychology Award

Award | Eligibility: Arts, Pure and Applied Science, Psychology, Current 4th year

Established through the estate of Ellen V. Piers (’39, ’46), this award is granted to a fourth-year student who is seeking graduate study in Clinical Psychology, as determined by the Department of Psychology. Dr. Ellen Piers earned a BA (1939) and a BEd (1946) at Acadia and finally a PhD (1954) at Peabody before becoming a well-known psychologist.

Elliott Richardson High Performance Sport Awards

Award | Eligibility: Athletics

Established in 2021, these awards are presented annually on recommendation by the Manager, Sport Performance in conjunction with the Varsity Sport Coaches. They are awarded to one male and one female returning varsity athlete. The recipients should be of good academic standing (above 3.0 GPA) and have demonstrated the virtues of high performance in their preparation for their sport: compete, resilience, discipline, work ethic, passion. The award honours Elliott Richardson (2010), former Head Strength and Conditioning Coach/Manager, Sport Performance, and Football Axemen. His commitment to continually striving for excellence led him to become a team captain, two-time All-Canadian, and two-time AUS Champion. This commitment carried him to the CFL as an undrafted free agent who went on to start for two years during his three-year career. Following his playing career, Elliott returned to Acadia to take on the role as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. His goal was to help every athlete and team become their best. Over 10 years, the service that Elliott founded developed into a multi-disciplinary, high performance program that became the model in Canada.

Emma Parker Morton '68 Bursary in Education

Bursary | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Education

The Emma Parker Morton '68 Bursary in Education. Established in 2013 through the Estate of Horace and Emma Morton '68. To be awarded to a full-time student studying in a Bachelor of Education program who demonstrates financial need. Emma Parker was born in 1913 and grew up in Medford, Nova Scotia. She began teaching as a teenager and met Horace Morton who she married in 1940. Emma taught all over Kings and Hants counties and travelled the world before concluding her career as librarian at the vocational school in Kentville.

Emma Tichenor Memorial Award

Award of up to $1,000 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Biology, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year, Graduate

Established in 2015 by the family and friends of Emma Tichenor, this award is granted annually to a full-time biology student, either undergraduate or graduate, who is focusing their research on wildlife management or conservation, with a preference for the study of black bears.

Emma Kate DiCara Tichenor, 24, worked with Acadia through a joint NS Department of Natural Resources. As part of this collaborative program, she was working as a junior project biologist when she lost her life in a motor vehicle accident. Passionate about wildlife, Emma earned a BSc in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University (2011) and a MSc in Conservation Biology from the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand (2013).

Engineer’s Nova Scotia Award

Award | Eligibility: Applied Science

The Engineer’s Nova Scotia Award is presented each year to a student, graduating with an Engineering Diploma or Certificate from each of the Associated Universities, who best demonstrates the promise of using outstanding abilities to serve society in an ethical manner as a Professional Engineer. The Award will consist of an engraved certificate, a memento, and a cash prize subject to registration at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Engineering. The Award winner will be selected by students of the graduating class is consultation with the Engineering Faculty members and should exhibit the following qualities: Ethical Conduct, Extra-Curricular Activities, Industry, Intelligence, Scholastic Achievement, Service to Fellow Students, Technical Skills and Need. Engineers Nova Scotia desires that the successful candidate be one who will most likely use a combination of the above qualities in an unselfish manner for the benefit of society and for the promotion of the Engineering Profession.

Engineering Entrance Scholarship- Board Scholarship of $450 ($150 a year for up to three years). To be be awarded to student(s) entering the applied science (engineering) course who have completed matriculation with an average not lower than 85 percent.

Engineers Nova Scotia Entrance Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year

Engineers Nova Scotia Entrance Scholarship is awarded each year to one entering engineering student from each associated university. The recipient will be a Canadian citizen who is a superior student and who has demonstrated integrity, ethical conduct, service to fellow students and participation in extracurricular activities. Candidates are selected by Academic excellence. Engineers Nova Scotia provides a scholarship annually to a graduating student from each of the Associate Universities in Nova Scotia, who exhibits academic excellence. The scholarship is to be held at Dalhousie University.

Enid Hager Clarke Bursary

Bursary

The Enid Hager Clarke Bursary was provided by Ms Clarke to assist with the cost of textbooks for undergraduate or graduate students resident in Kings or Saint John Counties of New Brunswick. The interest on a gift of $10,000 is annually available for this purpose for students engaged in any legitimate educational endeavour.

Eric James Men’s Basketball Award

Award of up to $1,000 | Eligibility: Athletics

To be awarded to a returning Acadia men’s basketball player in recognition of their leadership, community involvement, and is in good academic standing. The recipient will be chosen by the Head Coach of the varsity men’s basketball program and the Director of Athletics.

Ernest R. Hayes Award

Award

The Ernest R. Hayes Award, provided by the family, friends and former students of Dr. Ernest R. Hayes (Acadia '48), a member of the Chemistry Department 1975-1991 and Head from 1975-81, supports a student attending the annual Atlantic Region Student Conference or the Annual conference of the Canadian Society for Chemistry. The student will present the results of research completed as part of the B.Sc. Honours program. The award is based on an oral presentation of the research project.

Ernest Robert MacKenzie Kay Scholarships in Biology

The Ernest Robert MacKenzie Kay Scholarships in Biology are awarded annually to students registered in the BSc (Biology) program. The scholarships are provided to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and who plan to continue their studies in the field of medical research. The scholarships are made possible through the generosity of Dr. Ernest R. M. Kay of Hamilton, Ontario who was a professor of biology at Acadia during the 1948/49and 1954/55 academic years.

Ernie Foote and Alyce Foote Memorial Entrance Scholarships

Scholarship | Eligibility: Entering first year

The Ernie Foote and Alyce Foote Memorial Entrance Scholarships were established by his many friends in recognition of the outstanding contribution which he made to his country and to his fellow man. The Rev. Ernest Gordon Blair Foote, O.B.E., C.D., B.A. (Acadia, '33), D.D. (Presbyterian College, '57), D.C.L. (Acadia, '33), was born in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, and served with distinction in war and peace as a chaplain in the Royal Canadian Navy, rising to the position of Chaplain of the Fleet (Protestant). Upon the integration of the chaplaincy services, he became Deputy Chaplain General and finally Chaplain General (Protestant) of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Esther Clark Wright International Student Scholarships

The Esther Clark Wright International Student Scholarships are awarded annually to entering or returning international students.These scholarships are made possible through a bequest from the estate of Esther Clark Wright of Wolfville, NS. Dr. Wright (Acadia BA 1912, HON DL 1975; PhD, Radcliffe-Harvard 1931; HON DL, Dalhousie University 1981; HON DL, University of New Brunswick 1984) was a noted author. She taught Sociology at Acadia from 1943 to 1947. In 1988 the lounge in Chase Court and the University Archives were named in her honor.

Esther Fillmore Pratt Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science

This scholarship is intended for students enrolled in or about to enter the Faculty of Science. Awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty of Science and given to any student(s) entering or returning to the BSc program. Recipient(s) must have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement. Financial need is also a consideration. Scholarship is renewable (not to exceed 4 years) if criteria as outlined in citation is met.

Esther M. Gardiner Memorial Award

Award | Eligibility: Entering first year, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island

Established through a bequest from Mrs. Gardiner’s estate, the award is made available to entering undergraduate students who were born in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island commencing full-time study in any discipline at Acadia University. Other criteria for the award may be determined at the discretion of the University, including renewability, but include financial need and/or academic excellence. Two $10,000 awards shall be granted each year.

Ethel Verge Kinsman and Frederick Borden Kinsman Scholar-Bursaries

Scholar-Bursary | Eligibility: Nova Scotia

The Ethel Verge Kinsman and Frederick Borden Kinsman Scholar-Bursaries are awarded annually to students from Kings County, Nova Scotia on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated financial need. The scholar-bursaries were established in 2003 by Eleanor K. Veague (BSH, Acadia, 1948), in memory of her mother Ethel Verge Kinsman (Acadia, 1922) and her father, Frederick Borden Kinsman (Acadia, 1916).

EVANOV Radio Group Music Awards

Award | Eligibility: Music, Entering first year

The EVANOV Radio Group Music Awards are provided annually to two Canadian residents entering their first year of a Bachelor of Music degree program. Recipients will be selected on recommendation by the Director of the School of Music at Acadia. The awards have been generously established by HFX Broadcasting Inc.

Evans Environmental and Sustainability Studies Scholarship

Scholarship of up to $5,000 | Eligibility: Environmental and Sustainability Studies

Established in 2020 by Donna and Rod Evans (’73), this scholarship recognizes upper level students majoring in Environmental and Sustainability Studies (ESST) with outstanding academic achievement and preferably demonstrating an interest in realistic and achievable environmentally sustainable energy options for Canada. Recipients are identified by the ESST Faculty Council annually. Value: $5,000

Rod Evans began his university education at Acadia in mechanical engineering and completed his BSc (General) and BSc (Mechanical Engineering) at the University of Alberta. Rod spent his career in the Oil and Gas Industry in Alberta and, supported by Donna, founded and grew Upside Engineering into a successful multi-disciplined engineering company that was recognized as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies. Rod and Donna are grateful to have a family of two sons and their partners, and two granddaughters.

Evelyn Leonard Marshall Munro and Frederick Newton Munro Bursary

Bursary | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Education, Current 1st year

The Evelyn Leonard Marshall Munro and Frederick Newton Munro Bursary in Education is awarded annually to a deserving student from Nova Scotia who demonstrates financial need and is entering the second year of the Bachelor of Education program at Acadia University. This bursary was established by a niece of the late Fred Munro (BA ’29, MA ’33) and Evelyn Munro (BA ’32). Mr. and Mrs. Munro were both dedicated to teaching profession and this memorial award will go to a person who displays this quality and the diligence necessary to be a credit to the profession of teaching.

Everett and Maude Coldwell Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship of up to $450 | Eligibility: Arts, French, Spanish, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

The Everett & Maude Coldwell Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a senior honours student who has made a distinguished record in French or Spanish. It may be awarded to a senior honours student who is going on to graduate work in the same language at another university which either specializes in that language or is located in the province or country of which that language is a native language. Need, character, ability and the probability of entering the teaching profession in the public schools of Nova Scotia are to be taken into consideration. The scholarship was established from the Estate of Ray Lloyd Coldwell (B.A. Acadia, 1917; M.A. Columbia; M.A. Acadia) teacher, administrator, and author.

Everett P. Linton Prize in Chemistry

Prize of up to $500 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Chemistry, Current 1st year

A prize provided by students and colleagues of Dr. Everett P. Linton, member of the Department 1936 to 1975 and Head from 1966 to 1975, is awarded to the student major in the first year of a chemistry program who has achieved highest marks in six hours of chemistry.
