MacKay Memorial Scholarships in Computer Science, Chemistry and Physics

Scholarship | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Current 1st year, Current 2nd year, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

These scholarships were endowed in 1989 by Mr. Donald MacKay (Acadia 1929) and Mrs. Rose (Chamber) Mackay (Acadia 1930) in memory of their son Donald Gordon MacKay, who was born in Arvida, Quebec in 1940 and died in 1965 while working as a mechanical engineer on petroleum exploration in Libya. The income from the endowment shall be used to provide scholarships for Canadian undergraduate students, entering their second or subsequent year of study at Acadia, who have achieved high academic standing, who are following a broadly-based program, and who have demonstrated qualities of leadership and personal integrity. Each year a recommendation will be made by the Director of the School of Computer Science, and the Heads of the Departments of Chemistry and Physics. If no award is made, the income shall be added to the capital endowment.

MacLean Athletic Awards

The MacLean Athletic Awards were endowed in 2022 by Donald MacLean (’57). The awards will be granted to all-around student-athletes from Canada who have demonstrated leadership qualities and an interest in athletic activities. 80% of the disbursement will be designated to a member of the varsity football program and 20% to a member of the women’s rugby program. The awards are made, on the recommendation of the Director of Varsity Athletics. Preference will be given to a Nova Scotia born student-athlete. The recipient shall be passionate about community, possess strong leadership qualities and be in good academic standing.

MacLean Awards

The MacLean Awards are awarded, on a renewable basis, to all-around academic students from Canada who have demonstrated leadership qualities and an interest in athletic activities. The awards are made, on the recommendation of the Director of Varsity Athletics, to students on the University's varsity football team. The awards may be held for a maximum of five years. This gifted award was established by Donald MacLean CAS 57' and Patricia MacLean in 2005.

MacLean Family Arts Award

The MacLean Family Arts Award is awarded to a returning upper-year student in the Faculty of Arts, at the discretion of the Dean of Arts. The award will be granted to a student from Atlantic Canada who is enrolled in an Honours program and demonstrates high academic achievement and may have financial need.

Established in 2022 by Don MacLean (’57) in honour of his cousins and fellow Acadia graduates Elizabeth Hoyt (’57) and Aleen Stanton (’15). Elizabeth graduated from Acadia with a BSc in Biology. A natural and gifted artist, Elizabeth developed a professional interior design practice, followed by a long career as a science teacher in New Brunswick. Throughout her career and in her retirement, she has always been a strong supporter of arts and culture. Aleen shares a love of the arts; she graduated in 2015 with a BA (Hons) in History and received the Hayward Medal. She works for the Government of Nova Scotia on culture, heritage, and climate change issues. Aleen is also a Research Associate with the Nova Scotia Museum, and has published articles on topics such as environmental history, music heritage, and heritage craft. Though of different generations, Don, Elizabeth, and Aleen all have felt nurtured by Acadia and their family relationship strengthened because of it. They are grateful and proud to establish and participate in this award supporting students in the arts.

MacNeill Scholar-Bursaries

Scholar-Bursary of up to $8,000 | Eligibility: Canada, Entering first year, USA

The MacNeill Scholar-Bursaries, valued at $8,000 each, are awarded to Canadian or American students entering full-time study at Acadia in any discipline. A total of 20 students may receive these scholar-bursaries in any given year. The scholarships are renewable for four years, or until graduation, subject to maintaining an average of 80%.

MacNeily Economics Research Award

Established in 2019 by Ian MacNeily (’81), this award is designed to support the unique research work of Acadia’s most promising undergraduate Honours students in Economics. It will be awarded during the summer prior to the final honours year in recognition of the recipient’s Economics thesis proposal.

Ian MacNeily is a proud Acadia graduate of the class of 1981 (BA, Economics). A CPA, CA, Ian is an accomplished senior financial executive with extensive experience in building and leading public companies. Major Fred Kelly Athletics Award

Award of up to $1,000 | Eligibility: Athletics

Established in 2018 in memory of Fred Kelly who was Hockey Head Coach from 1927 to 1966 and Director of Varsity Athletics from 1940 to 1967. During his stay of forty years at Acadia, the “major” or “Kel” as he was so fondly called, coached almost every intercollegiate sport. He inspired teams to approximately 50 Maritime or provincial intercollegiate championships in track and field, English rugby, swimming, hockey and basketball. Included are 31 out of a possible 33 Maritime Intercollegiate titles in track and field.

To be awarded annually to an athlete in recognition of their leadership, community involvement, and is in good academic standing. Preference will be given to a men’s hockey player.

Manford Wendell McCutcheon Bursary

Bursary

The Manford Wendell McCutcheon Bursary provides $660, being the annual interest yielded from an endowment given by two brothers and a sister of the late Manford Wendell McCutcheon (Acadia, 1914 '16). Preference is to be given to a graduate of the Saint John High School (New Brunswick) enrolling for a course in Science. Reversion, if necessary, would be to a student from New Brunswick at large.

Margaret Ann MacKeen MacKechnie Scholarship in Painting

Margaret Anne Gidney Bursary

Bursary | Eligibility: Nova Scotia

Established in 2019 in memory of Margaret Anne Gidney ('71, '73) by her husband Anthony Nelson Sharpe PhD, this bursary is awarded to full-time students preferably from Digby Regional High School in recognition of financial need.

Margaret Anne Gidney grew up in Sandy Cove, NS and obtained her BSc and MSc (Biology) at Acadia University. She joined the Institute of Biological Sciences of the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa, initially studying mercury contamination of fish in the Ottawa River. She then set up and ran a laboratory to develop monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) in a group researching lipopolysaccharide (LPS) bacterial surface antigens. She developed l'vlAbs which are widely used in methods for rapid detection of the enteropathogenic bacterium Escherichia coli. 0157:H7 and for LPS epitopes of Neisseria meningitidis. The latter further developed a conjugate vaccine for Meningitis C that became a vaccine particularly suitable and effective for infants -after two years the disease was virtually wiped out across Great Britain. Margaret Anne retired from NRC in 2006 and died in 2015.

Margaret E. MacKay ('72) Bursary

Established in 2017 by Margaret E. MacKay, this bursary is granted annually to a full-time student majoring in Biology who demonstrates financial need as well as creativity through artistic endeavours. The recipient is preferably from or has some connection to Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

Margaret MacKay grew up in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and graduated from Acadia with a BSc in Biology in 1972. She taught school in Halifax and Pictou County while pursuing her love of painting.

The Margaret L. Ford Scholarships in English (4), History (4), Political Science (4), French (4) and German (4) were endowed by the late Ms. Ford (B.A. Acadia, 1922; M.A. Toronto, 1930) who was born in Wolfville and was a distinguished teacher in schools in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Ontario. They are awarded annually to the top students in years one, two, three and four in English, history, political science, French and German.

Margaret McCarthy Research Scholarship in Environmental Biology

Two scholarships awarded on the recommendation of the Biology Department to a third year Honours Biology student (planning on entering the fourth year) or a Graduate Student. Students should be working on a research topic related to Environmental Biology and leading to an Honours degree or Masters degree. The scholarships are intended to fund research undertaken during the summer months (May 1 to September 1). Applications, with a description of the proposed research topic should be submitted to the Head of the Biology Department by March 15th of each year.

Margaret’s Legacy Award

Awarded to a mature student enrolled in a Bachelor of Education who has had some work and life experience, moving toward a second career, the Margaret Aylward Legacy Award recognizes a student who has a strong work ethic and is bravely undertaking a new chapter later in life. Preferably identifying as a woman, this student may be juggling parenting or other caregiving, part-time or full-time work, volunteer leadership roles in the community or other extraordinary challenges.

Honouring their mother, Margaret Aylward (’74 & ’79), the family is proudly sharing her accomplishments and personal traits through this award. Margaret raised five children while going to school and working full-time as an educator. Fiercely determined, she took courses over many years at night and in the summer in order to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Education degrees, furthering her expertise and abilities as a teacher.

Marguerita Joy Cutten Scholarship

The Marguerita Joy Cutten Scholarship. Originally endowed by the late President Emeritus of Acadia and Colgate Universities, George Barton Cutten, and the late Mrs. Cutten, and subsequently enhanced by the Classes of 1920, 1921 and 1922, an endowed scholarship with an annual value of $2200 has been established in memory of Marguerita Joy Cutten (1902 1926), a graduate of the Class of 1922. Mary and Colin Lucas Bursary for Nursing Studies

Bursary | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science

Established in 2023 by their son, Dr. C. Robert Lucas (’68, ’69), this bursary supports deserving and needy students in the BScN program in the School of Health Sciences to complete their studies by awarding financial support up to the available endowment disbursement.

Mary Elliott was born in Milton, Ontario in 1904 and studied nursing at the Vancouver General Hospital and the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC. Following qualification as a Registered Nurse in 1932, she began her career in health care. Colin Lucas was born in Winnipeg in 1903 and attended the University of British Columbia where he earned BASc and MASc degrees. He later attended the University of Toronto where he earned a PhD and where he worked in Medical Research until retiring in 1969. In 1964, Acadia University awarded Colin an honorary DSc. Mary and Colin married in 1942 and their son Robert has honoured them through the establishment of this bursary. Robert graduated from Acadia with a BScH in Chemistry in 1968 and an MSc in Inorganic Chemistry in 1969. Further studies at Oxford University led to a DPhil in Organometallic Chemistry. Subsequently, he spent most of his career as Professor of Chemistry, Head of the Department of Chemistry and Dean of Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Matthew Balsor Scholar-Bursary

Established by Matthew Balsor (’11) in 2018, this scholar-bursary is granted in recognition of academic excellence and financial need to a full-time in-course undergraduate enrolled in the F.C. Manning School of Business. The recipient displays their well-rounded character through extracurricular activities in the community or on campus.

Matthew graduated from Acadia University with an Honours BBA and says, “I was fortunate enough to have my post-secondary education paid for through scholarships and bursaries and am in a position to be able to give back and help others who are working hard to help themselves.” Matthew furthered his credentials with a CIM and FCUIC, having worked in finance before returning to be employed at his alma mater.

Matthew Kohlenberg Memorial Award in Philosophy

The Matthew Kohlenberg Memorial Award in Philosophy. Established in memory of Matthew Kohlenberg in 2013 by his family and friends, on the recommendation of the Department of Philosophy, the award will be given to a returning full-time Bachelor of Arts student majoring in Philosophy who demonstrates (1) a passion for learning evidenced by academic excellence together with active and inclusive participation in the learning process; and (2) either (i) well-rounded engagement and camaraderie within the university community or (ii) financial need. As an Honours Philosophy student at Acadia, Matthew searched for truth and meaning. He had passion and purpose. Matthew was always smiling and enjoyed engaging with people. Merle Fowler Bancroft Memorial Scholarship

The Merle Fowler Bancroft Memorial Scholarship in the area of field research in Geology is provided by the late Marjorie K. (Haley) Bancroft (Acadia Ladies Seminary, 1914), as a memorial to her late husband. Prof. Bancroft (B.A. Acadia, 1911; B.A. Yale, 1913) was a geologist, teacher and author, and was Professor and Head of Geology at Acadia from 1923 to 1960.

Michael Hazard (’81) Memorial Basketball Award

This award was established in 2021 by alumni and friends of men’s basketball in memory of Mike Hazard (’81). It is awarded annually to a men’s varsity basketball student-athlete who demonstrates leadership qualities on and off the court, competitive spirit, community engagement, and is in good academic standing. It is preferred that the recipient is Black, Indigenous or a Person of Colour and demonstrates financial need. The recipient is chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the Head Coach of the men’s varsity basketball program.

Rhode Island native Michael Hazard (’81), undoubtedly qualifies as one of the greatest ever basketball Axemen. A Conference and All-Canadian All-Star during his years at Acadia, he ranks high on the team’s list of all-time scoring leaders. Michael was instrumental in helping to lead the basketball Axemen to the national final in 1978. Michael is the only Acadia men’s basketball recipient of the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy presented to the Outstanding Male Basketball Player in the CIS. Michael passed away in 2020.

Mike Chiasson Hockey Leadership Award

Award | Eligibility: Athletics, S.M.I.L.E. volunteer

Established in 2021 by Mike Chiasson ('11). This award recognizes a varsity men's hockey student-athlete who is in good academic standing and possesses positive leadership qualities on and off the ice. Preference will be shown to an athlete who volunteers as a member of the SMILE and/ or Kinderskills program. The recipient shall be selected by the head coach of the men's hockey program and the director of varsity athletics.

Mike Chiasson was a member of the hockey Axemen from 2007 to 2011 and spent two seasons as an Assistant Coach with the program. During his time as a student-athlete at Acadia, Mike was passionate about working with youth and was a member of SMILE. In 2015, Mike joined the Pittsburgh Penguins organization as Goaltending Development Professional.

Mike Gillen Memorial Award

Established in 2017 by an anonymous Alberta corporation. To be awarded to a returning Acadia football player. The recipient must be in good academic standing and displays dedication through leadership, perseverance, commitment to hard work and general love of life. The recipient will be chosen by the Director of Athletics in consultation with a football committee.

Mike Gillen was a vital member of the Acadia University Axemen football team from the time he arrived on campus in 2002 until his departure in 2006. As a running back, punt returner and a team captain, Mike always lived up to the #1 on his jersey and inspired his teammates on a daily basis with his energy, positive attitude, and his genuine concern for everyone involved with the Axemen football family. Mike was a once in a generation leader.

Mildred Schurman Memorial Scholarship

The Mildred Schurman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a second or subsequent year student in the B.A. program with a major or honours in French and who intends to enter the B.Ed. program. The scholarships are provided through the Estate of Mildred Carolyn Schurman (B.A. Acadia, 1916; M.A., 1919) who dedicated her life to the teaching profession.

Millicent (Forsyth-Smith) Rice Women’s Basketball Award

Award | Eligibility: Athletics, Nova Scotia

Established in 2020 by the family of Millicent Forsyth-Smith Rice. The award will be presented to a returning student-athlete who is a member of the women’s basketball program. Preference will be given to a Nova Scotia born student-athlete. The recipient shall be passionate about community, possess strong leadership qualities and be in good academic standing.

The recipient will be recommended by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the head coach of the women’s basketball program.

The Millicent (Forsyth-Smith) Rice Women’s Basketball Award was created to recognize the impact Millicent Forsyth-Smith Rice (’43) made during her time as a member of the Acadia Women’s Basketball program. A graduate of Wolfville High, Forsyth-Smith Rice coached the High School basketball team as a student-athlete. At Acadia, she was captain of the women’s team. Millicent was 98 years of age at the time of her passing in 2019 and was the first of three generations that attended and graduated from Acadia University.

Minnie A. Poole Scholarship

Minnie Brown Cutten Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship

The Minnie Brown Cutten Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Claire Cutten Manwell (Acadia 1925) and Mrs. Muriel Cutten Hoitsma (Acadia 1924) in memory of their mother (Acadia 1896) who was the wife of Dr. George B. Cutten, President of Acadia, 1910 1922. The fund provides five in course scholarships of approximately $980 for superior students who are Deans' Scholars and who do not already hold a major award.

Mirko Wicha Computer Science Scholarships

Scholarship of up to $10,000 | Eligibility: Computer Science

Established in 2018 by alumnus Mirko Wicha ('82), this scholarship is awarded to entering or returning Computer Science students in recognition of academic excellence. Preference will be given to qualifying varsity soccer players.

Born in former Czechoslovakia, Mirko immigrated to Canada as a child, and attended Acadia where he studied Computer Science and played on the men's varsity soccer team. Following his graduation in 1982, Mirko moved to Switzerland to embark on what would be a high successful career in high tech. His passion for technology brought him back to Canada, first Halifax and then Ottawa, then Munich and Brussels from 1993, and finally settling in Montreal in 1999. He founded Haivision in 2004, a market leader in advanced video encoding and streaming within the defense, broadcast and medical industries. An award-winning company recognized as one of the most influential in video streaming worldwide, Haivision is also one of the fastest growing companies. Morse Memorial Scholarship

The Morse Memorial Scholarship. A scholarship of $760 was established by the late Hazel Gordon Morse (B.A. Acadia, 1920) to be awarded annually to the student who attains the highest standing in economics, political science or sociology, who is majoring in one of these subject areas, and who is completing their third or fourth year of study.

The Mr. & Mrs. Parmenas Orr Memorial Scholarship ($475) is awarded annually to a superior student in the nutrition degree in the School of Nutrition and Dietetics on recommendation of the Director.

The scholarship was established by the late Ms. E. Jeanette Orr of Kensington, P.E.I., a nutritionist and long time staff member of Acadia in the food services and quantity foods areas. She was a graduate of Prince of Wales College, MacDonald College of McGill University and Columbia University.

Established in 2018 by The Rotary Club of Wolfville – Mud Creek. These awards will be granted annually preferably to one student from each of the region`s secondary schools: West Kings, Horton, Northeast Kings, Avon View and Central Kings. The recipients will be chosen in recognition of financial need.

The Rotary Club of Wolfville – Mud Creek was formed in 2010 with six members from the Rotary Club of Wolfville. The name `Mud Creek` was chosen to associate the club with the rich history of Wolfville, formerly known as Mud Creek. Murdock C. Smith Scholarship in Marine Biology

Scholarship of up to $660 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Biology, Current 3rd year, Current 4th year

A scholarship endowed by the late Murdock C. Smith of Lynn, Massachusetts, to enable one or two students in biology to spend a summer session in the study of marine biology at an institution approved by the Department. Students whose work is satisfactory will receive credit towards their Acadia graduate degree. If there is no eligible fourth-year student, the Department of Biology may recommend a student of the third year.
