W. Malcolm Orchard Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship of up to $1,550 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Chemistry, Current 3rd year

The W. Malcolm Orchard Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to an outstanding student who has completed three years of study towards the Honours degree in Chemistry and plans to pursue graduate studies in that field. Mr.Orchard graduated from Acadia with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1937.

The W. S. DeWolfe Bursaries. The sum of $240 is divided annually at the discretion of the University. By the terms of the bequest, these bursaries are available for male students only. They will not be granted to those receiving aid from the Payzant Fund.

Walker Science Research Award

Award | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Pursuing an Honours Research Project

The Walker Science Research Award is designed to support the unique research work of Acadia’s most promising undergraduate Honours students in Science. It will be awarded during the summer prior to the final year in recognition of their research proposal for the BSc Honours in any of the natural sciences.

Robert Walker (’73, ’17) and Karen Higgins (’74), both from Dartmouth, met in High School and were married a few days before Karen’s graduation from Acadia. Karen subsequently spent much of her career in financial services. Bob continued his studies after his BSc in Physics at McMaster, earning a MEng in Engineering Physics and a PhD in Electrical Engineering. He has received many academic and service awards for his outstanding career as government scientist, manager and senior executive. Karen and Bob have three children and nine grandchildren.

Walker Wood Scholar-Bursaries

Scholar-Bursary of up to $4,000 | Eligibility: Entering first year, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island

Nine scholar-bursaries will be awarded on a renewable basis to entering students who are Canadian citizens from the Maritime Provinces who have shown financial need. Three students will be chosen from each of the Faculties of Arts, Pure and Applied Science, and Professional Studies. Special consideration will be given to those candidates who demonstrate leadership qualities and participation in extracurricular and community-based activities.

Value: The award is valued at $4,000 annually for a maximum of four years.

The award has been established by the Walker Wood Foundation, which is dedicated to the funding of post-secondary education at all levels to students who have high academic standing, demonstrated leadership or similar qualities, and who might otherwise have found it difficult to afford further education.

Wallace and Trenna Turner Scholarship

Established by the Turners in 1983 to support a needy scholarship level student in the second or subsequent year of study in art, music or creative writing. The recipient must be a person of proven creative talents. Wallace Turner was a well-known water colour artist, who together with Trenna, had an interest in helping needy students with creative talents.

Wanda Langley Award

The Wanda Langley Award will be awarded annually on recommendation of the Biology Department to support a student majoring in Biology who is participating in research activities; demonstrates initiative and improvement in their academic program; and possesses strong community and Acadia spirit. Preference will be given to Honours students.

The award was established in 2008 through contributions from faculty and staff in honour of Wanda Langley. Wanda’s 36.5 years of commitment to Acadia and her dedication to students are celebrated though this award.

Wayne and Susie Golding Langley Award

The Wayne and Susie Golding Langley Award is granted annually, on the recommendation of the School of Nutrition & Dietetics, to a third or fourth year student in the School of Nutrition and Dietetics with a demonstrated interest and aptitude in Sports Nutrition. In the event there is no eligible student in Sports Nutrition, the award can be conferred on a promising and well-rounded Nutrition and Dietetics student.

Wells Family Athletic Award

Established in 2019 by Derek Wells ‘68. The award will be alternated between a member of the varsity men’s hockey program and a female student-athlete. The recipient shall be in good academic standing and demonstrates strong leadership on the team and in the community. The recipient will be recommended by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the head coach.

The Wells Family Athletic Award is in recognition of Don Wells, member of varsity men’s hockey (1964-65), varsity men’s hockey coach (1965-84) and athletic director (1984-97) his son Michael Wells, member of varsity men’s hockey (1985-88), his daughter Wendi Ann Wells, varsity women’s soccer and All Canadian (1987-91) and brother Derek Wells, varsity track runner (1965-1968).

Wendy (Bishop) Morgan Memorial Scholarship

The Wendy (Bishop) Morgan Memorial Scholarship was established through donations from family and friends and to commemorate the life of an excellent student who graduated with a B.A. with Honours in History in 1970. At the time of her death in May 1988, she was involved in a successful executive career. The scholarship is awarded annually to a second year Bachelor of Education student who shows exceptional promise as a classroom teacher.

Wendy Seaman Memorial Scholarships

The Wendy Seaman Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually to one student entering the Bachelor of Business Administration program and one entering the Bachelor of Education program. Preference is given to women. The recipients are to be superior students with a broad range of interests in people and human relations. The business student must be a graduate of a high school between Windsor and Digby. The education student must be an Acadia graduate. Mrs. Seaman died tragically in January 1989, having served family, friends and her community in exemplary ways as a parent, youth supporter, school board member and business woman.

White Memorial Scholarship

The White Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to a student who is studying towards a degree with a major in a program offered by that Department. The scholarship is made available through the White Memorial Fund which for many years was used to support a named chair in mathematics. In 1997, faculty in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics agreed that the funds should be used to recognize outstanding academic achievement. The White Memorial Fund was established through an endowment by the White family, shipbuilders and lumbering entrepreneurs, many of whom were educated at Acadia University.

Whitman House (Tully) Scholarship

The Whitman House (Tully) Scholarship ($200) is awarded annually to a Tully resident who has lived in that residence for at least one year and who best exhibits the Tully spirit while maintaining a superior level of academic achievement. The scholarship will be applied against the fees of the second term. Funding for the scholarship is provided by Tully alumni and friends.

Whitney Athletic Bursary

Established in 2016 by Mary Whitney MacVicar (’90) and Allan MacVicar (’92), the award is granted annually in recognition of financial need. The recipient is a female student actively involved in athletic pursuits (varsity, club or external) while attending Acadia. Bursary applicants must convey in writing how this bursary will support their academic and athletic endeavours.

Established in 2016 by WildBrain, formerly DHX Media, these awards are granted annually to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in a Bachelor of Business Administration who have a demonstrated interest in the creative arts – music, visual art, theatre, dance, film or digital media. In recognition of academic success and with a preference for students who may have financial need, the awards will be granted to students representing the mandate of equity, diversity and inclusion.

WildBrain Ltd., formerly DHX Media is a Canadian media production, distribution and broadcasting company, which was established in 2006. A key player internationally in the creation of content for children and families, the company is the largest independent owner of children’s television programming in the industry.

William A. and Bertha L. Harper Memorial Bursary

The William A. and Bertha L. Harper Memorial Bursary is available for a needy student in a humanities program. Preference will be given to a student from the Maritimes. It was established by Elizabeth (Harper) Kymlicka (B.A. Acadia, 1955) in memory of her parents, William Anderson Harper (B.Th. Acadia, 1931) and Bertha Whitman Harper (L.Mus., Acadia, 1929).

William Hall Heritage Scholarship

Scholarship | Eligibility: Aboriginal and/or African Nova Scotian, Visible Minority

The William Hall Heritage Scholarship is awarded by VANSDA to provide financial assistance for two African Nova Scotian youth residing in the Annapolis Valley (from Windsor to Digby) so that they will be encouraged to continue their post-secondary education at Acadia University immediately following completion of graduation requirements set by the Nova Scotia Department of Education.

Acadia University will provide matching funds up to $1,000 to each recipient, to a maximum of two awards annually once they are registered as a full time student at Acadia University.

William Haynes Memorial Scholar-Bursary

The William Haynes Memorial Scholar-Bursary was established in 1993 by Arden (DCL Acadia 1990) and Beverly (Class of 1949) Haynes in memory of their son who attended Acadia 1970 74. The bursary is available to students with a sound academic record and who have a demonstrated need for financial assistance.

William Henry Dyas Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship

The William Henry Dyas Memorial Scholarship was provided through the generosity of his daughter, Gretta, and is awarded on recommendation of the Chaplain to a continuing student who is preparing for service in church ministry or for work in religious education, or any other field of religious endeavour, and who has shown practical interest in ecumenical university chaplaincy at Acadia, and possibly as a profession. Rev. Dyas was a graduate of Horton Academy and Acadia (B.A., 1900; D.D. 1933).

William J. Wright Memorial Scholarships

The William J. Wright Memorial Scholarships provided by the legacy of the late Dr. William Wright, are annually awarded to superior students who achieve Deans' List standing. Dr. Wright was a professional geologist who achieved distinction in Canada, the United States and abroad. He graduated B.Sc. Acadia, 1907; B.A. Yale, 1908; M.A., 1912; Ph.D., 1915; LL.D. University of New Brunswick, 1951.

William John Gordon Entrance Scholarships

The William John Gordon Entrance Scholarships (2) are provided for by a legacy from the Estate of the late Mr. Gordon whose wife, the late Mrs. Edith Rebecca Ells Gordon, a native of North Medford, Kings County, Nova Scotia, graduated from Acadia (B.A., '04, M.A., '05). The scholarships of $1995 each are awarded as renewable entrance scholarships and are normally available every third or fourth year.

William Laird Archibald Scholarship

The William Laird Archibald Scholarship was endowed by Dr. Francis M. Archibald (1919) in honour of his father, Dr. W.L. Archibald (1892), Principal of the Acadia Collegiate Academy, 1916-1926, and Registrar of Acadia University, 1926-1939. The award will normally be made each year to a student of high standing entering third year in Arts or Science; or it may, at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee, be awarded as an entrance scholarship to an exceptionally bright and needy student. The endowment fund for the William Laird Archibald Scholarship was enhanced in 2020 and subsequently by grandson William Archibald Fillmore (1958).

Willie Bradford Kempton Memorial Bursary

The Willie Bradford Kempton Memorial Bursary. A sum of money yielding $25 was given to Acadia by the Reverend Samuel Bradford Kempton, D.D., and his wife, Eliza A. Kempton, as a gift in memory of their son, Willie Bradford Kempton, who died in 1892, aged eight years.

Wilma H. Clark Award

Award | Eligibility: Arts, Music Therapy, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island

The Wilma H. Clark Award(s) will be granted to Bachelor of Music Therapy students in any year of study to support field placements (or practicums).

Recipients will be recommended to the Scholarships and Financial Aid Office by the Director of the School of Music and the Head of the Music Therapy program, who will 1) assess an application, 2) a 500-word essay outlining why the applicant is drawn to the profession, 3) a summary of extra curricular activities and community contributions, and 4) the applicant’s academic record (GPA). Assessors will consider demonstrated musical ability, strong clinical skills, and entrepreneurial and leadership attributes.

It is preferred that the Award supports students from the Maritimes who intend to pursue fieldwork opportunities in the Maritime provinces. If this preference cannot be met, the Director of the School of Music and the Head of the Music Therapy program will identify other suitable applicants for recommendation to the Scholarships and Financial Aid Office.

Winston Steeves Memorial Scholarship in Business

The Winston Steeves Memorial Scholarship in Business is awarded each year to a final year honours student in the School of Business Administration. The scholarship may be made available in the summer prior to the final honours year for thesis research purposes. The funds are provided from the Estate of Dr. Steeves and by his family. Dr. Steeves served on Acadia's Board of Governors from 1963 to 1985 when he was appointed an Honourary Governor. In 1986 he received the degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa.

Winter Carnival Chapel Fund Bursary

The Winter Carnival Chapel Fund Bursary. The Winter Carnival Chapel Fund was raised between 1958 and 1960 by the students of Acadia University through the sale of Chapel fund stamps. The annual interest on this fund (approximately $120) has been designated as a bursary for a Chaplain's assistant. Application should be made through the University Chaplain.

Women in Sport Award

Established in 2018, the recipient shall be a returning female athlete in her 3rd, 4th or 5th year of eligibility. The award shall be awarded to the same recipient two consecutive years. Starting in the 2025/26 academic year. The gift is intended to provide support through an expendable fund for the WUSC PETNA Foundation Scholarship, in accordance with the terms of reference below and the budget as outlined in Appendix I. Providing funding for an additional refugee student to attend Acadia under the terms of reference provided by the World University Service Canada.
