Scholarships & Financial Assistance

With education costs on the rise, enhancing student assistance is a top priority for Acadia. Each year, we award more than $4 million to students in the form of scholarships, scholar-bursaries, bursaries, awards, and prizes. By maintaining a strong scholarship and financial assistance program, we are able to attract, retain and support our students.

As a donor to scholarships and financial assistance, you can direct your gift toward: general award funds or awards for specific departments, faculties, research, or athletic teams; any existing named awards; or you can create a personal legacy by establishing a named award yourself. Lou and Gloria Thurber Bursary

Established through the generosity of Lou Thurber (’49, ’50), the Lou and Gloria Thurber Bursary is awarded annually to entering students in second semester on the basis of financial need. Two $5,000 awards are available annually – one for a student from Barrington Passage, NS, and one from Freeport, NS.

Lou and Gloria Thurber attended Acadia University in the 1940s, graduating in 1949 with a BA, and Lou again in 1950 with a BEd. They spent their lives in Barrington Passage where Lou was a teacher, and raising a family, including Acadia alumni Judith (BAH ’74) and Gary (BSc ’80, BScH ’82), and granddaughter Bethany (BScH ’08).
