Why is Acadia making these changes now?

Acadia is responding to sustained financial pressures, government‑mandated program reviews, enrolment constraints, and rising costs—challenges facing universities across the sector. Acting now allows us to plan proactively, protect our academic mission, and secure long‑term sustainability rather than relying on short‑term measures.

Are these changes driven by government pressure?

The government‑mandated Schedule H program review is one factor, but these changes are about Acadia’s broader responsibility to remain financially sustainable, academically strong, and responsive to students and communities. We are using required reviews as an opportunity for thoughtful renewal, not simply compliance.

Does this mean programs are being cut?

This does not disrupt any current programs, and students will be able to complete their programs as planned. The restructuring focuses on how programs are organized and supported, while program review processes continue with an emphasis on renewal, innovation, and alignment with student needs.

How will students be affected?

Students will benefit from more integrated academic supports, stronger advising and student services, enhanced interdisciplinary opportunities, and expanded leadership roles through student councils and governance.

Will there be more staffing reductions?

The staffing reductions announced in March were part of an immediate expense reduction related to a deficit budget. Any future decisions will be guided by careful planning, transparency, and respect for the people affected.

How much money will this save?

The goal is long‑term sustainability. Streamlining structures, reducing duplication, and aligning resources with priorities strengthens Acadia’s financial position while improving academic effectiveness. Detailed financial outcomes will be shared as plans are finalized.

Were faculty, staff, and students consulted—or is this already decided?

We held 32 engagement and consultation sessions with the campus community over three months from April through June. We also conducted two surveys that received 214 responses from students, faculty and staff.

Acadia has also been engaging in a year-long process around academic program renewal and the future of the university. The restructuring reflects what we heard from the community from all the extensive engagement opportunities.

There will continue to be many opportunities for consultation and engagement to shape the implementation processes over this coming year.

How is Acadia ensuring transparency and accountability?

Transparency and compassion are guiding principles in this process. We will continue to share information through town halls, working sessions, surveys, and this webpage. Campus community feedback will directly inform the final implementation process.

What would you say to people who are anxious or concerned?

We understand that change can create uncertainty. These decisions are being made carefully, grounded in listening, and focused on protecting what matters most—students, learning, and Acadia’s future. We remain committed to ongoing dialogue and support throughout this process.
