Students registered for academic accommodations are responsible for notifying Accessible Learning Services of their tests, midterms, and final exams that they wish to use their accommodations for. This ensures that any arrangements necessary to ensure a smooth testing experience are taking care of in advance by the Exam Coordinator. Please read the “What to Expect” and “Testing Room Expectation” sections carefully before coming to write your test.

Accessibility Statement

An accessibility statement should be included in all course syllabi, and has multiple purposes:
  • it informs students with disabilities how to access accommodations
  • identifies your commitment to the shared institutional responsibility towards accessibility
  • communicates expectations in your course and classroom relating to accessibility.

Please include the following Accessibility Statement in your syllabus:

“Acadia University is dedicated to improving access to campus life for all students with disabilities. While we attempt to ensure that courses are accessible, we recognize that there are barriers that need to be addressed on an individual basis. Students who require accommodations to complete coursework or otherwise fully participate in class should contact Accessible Learning Services directly at (accessible.learning@acadiau.ca) as soon as possible. More information is also available at Accessible Learning Services website."

Faculty are encouraged to include an additional paragraph before the standard statement, identifying specific course features, such as teaching format, lighting, audio/visual use, recordings, technology, access to slides/notes etc. to help students determine what needs have already been met by the course design.

Test Coordination Procedures

Students with disabilities often have additional time as an accommodation for timed assessments (tests, quizzes, exams). However, the need for this varies depending upon the assessment design, subject, and barrier being addressed by providing extra time. As such, students with an accommodation for extra time may only elect to write some of their tests with Accessible Learning Services. This accounts for most of the variation between the class list of accommodations and those writing each test.

Timed Assessments

Faculty are emailed no less than 3 days in advance of the testing date confirming which students have requested to write their test/exam through Accessible Learning Services. This email includes the required time accommodations instructions for sending the test materials for those writing with our office.

There may be more students who are entitled testing accommodations than request for a specific test. Students who do not submit a Test Request before the deadline are expected to write in the classroom without accommodations that aren't already incorporated into the classroom testing environment.

Protecting Student Privacy

Students are not required to disclose to their disabilities or why they have registered with Accessible Learning Services to anyone outside of the unit. Should a student choose to disclose to you about their disability, do not disclose to others without their explicit written permission.

It is important to recognize the dynamic between student and instructor. While students have the right to not answer any questions about their disabilities, they may feel obligated to answer.

  • Information about students accommodations are accessed through Accommodate, and should not be saved elsewhere.
  • Only use your Acadia email to communicate regarding accommodations or other student information
  • Engage students outside of class time (never in class) to discuss their accommodations and/or other potential supports.
  • Do not ask a student to provide medical or other information related to their disability. Remember that students are not required to disclose information about their condition(s) to you.
If you have any questions about the student’s accommodation, please contact our office.
