Christmas tree from Nova Scotia on Boston Common

The 13.7-metre (45-foot) white spruce is being donated this year by landowner Bette Gourley in Stewiacke, NS and will be cut down on November 15. Local Mi’kmaw Elder Joe Michael, Acadia’s Elder in Residence, will do a smudging ceremony and gift offering before the tree is cut. The tree will depart from Halifax on November 19, making its way to Boston for the exciting tree lighting taking place on November 30 near the Visitors' Information Center on Tremont St., and stars the special tree sent as a gift from Nova Scotia. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu will be joined by Santa Claus, Rudolph, and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Refreshments, music, and entertainment will be provided by local groups. The event starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m. with a pyrotechnic display.

Lights on the tree - about 7,000 of them - go on at about 7:55 p.m., followed by lights on 80+ other trees throughout the Common and the Public Garden. When the weather is reasonably good, about 25,000 spectators turn out for this festive event.  When the Mayor turns on the lights, Boston's magical holiday season officially begins!
