Alumni tee-off at Pipe Memorial Tourney

Derek Smith (’05) reacts to his shot off the first tee at the 2011 Southwire and Munden Enterprises Kristin Pipe Memorial Golf Tournament held at Ken-Wo Golf Club in New Minas Oct. 14. Smith, a member of the tourney’s organizing committee, arrived from London, England this week to participate in the annual event, proceeds from which benefit the Kristin Pipe Memorial Award and Acadia Axemen Varsity Football. Pipe was an outstanding student-athlete who played quarterback for Acadia from 1999-2004. He fought a private, personal battle with leukemia while at Acadia and passed away in 2005 at the age of 26. The Memorial Tournament helps preserve Pipe’s legacy by ensuring an annual award is made to an Acadia varsity football player on the basis of leadership, athletic skill and academic excellence. More than 80 people participated in this year’s event.
