Ceremony celebrates new Acadia Fitness Centre as campus, community focal point

A dedication ceremony was held Jan. 11, 2012 outside the new Acadia Fitness Centre to celebrate its opening and acknowledge key contributions that made the facility a reality. The Centre moved into the Auxiliary Gym at the Acadia Athletic Complex in September, 2011 and use in the first three months was up by more than 2,500 visits compared to the same time last year. It has become a campus and community focal point, offering an array of new exercise equipment and 6,000 square feet in which to work out. The Fitness Centre supports the health and wellness of students, staff and the local community, and was made possible by generous donations from the Acadia Students’ Union, the Province of Nova Scotia and the estate of Janet Louise Cook of Wolfville, in memory of her sister, Marsha Christine Cook, who passed away in her final year at Acadia in 1973. Pictured at the Dedication Ceremony are, from left to right: Acadia University President Ray Ivany; Acadia Students’ Union VP Communications Ashley Margeson; Mike Trinacty, Valley Region Representative, Department of Health and Wellness; Kings South MLA and Minister of Education Ramona Jennex; Acadia’s Director of Athletics Kevin Dickie; Janet MacLeod, representing the Janet Cook estate; and Development Officer-Athletics, Donnie Ehler.
