Acadia’s close-knit community spirit was on full display during a recent road trip along Nova Scotia’s scenic Lighthouse Route and Evangeline Trail, April 15-17, 2025. The journey, aimed at connecting with alumni in Bridgewater, Yarmouth and Digby, offered rich conversations and inspiring insights into how Acadia graduates are shaping their communities.
The trip kicked off in Bridgewater on April 15, where Dean of Arts Dr. David Duke visited Treehouse Village, an innovative ecoliving project. Guided by alumni Megan Beliveau (’14) and Catherine de Vreede (’05, ’11), Dr. Duke toured the sustainable community, which features solar-powered homes, shared smart cars, and communal meals, all part of a broader commitment to environmental stewardship.
That evening, Dr. Duke and Executive Director, Alumni Relations Oonagh Proudfoot (’93, ’06) gathered with alumni and local leaders that included Mayor David Mitchell of Bridgewater and Mayor Suzanne Lohnes-Croft of Mahone Bay. The conversation explored Treehouse Village’s model for sustainable living, the influence of an Acadia education in fostering creative problem-solving, and the critical role of innovation in addressing climate change and advancing education in Nova Scotia.
The dialogue continued in Yarmouth on April 16 with Mayor Pam Mood (’82) in attendance, and in Digby on April 17, where alumni gathered to share personal reflections and discuss pressing local issues such as coastal erosion and environmental resilience. Across all three communities, a common thread emerged: the profound and lasting impact of Acadia on its graduates – instilling in them a strong sense of inquiry, community leadership, and a deep commitment to sustainability.
Dr. Duke emphasized the importance of local climate action and praised alumni for translating their Acadia experiences into meaningful change across the province.
