IODE assists Acadia Education students

On Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, Ashley Beck-Sayer and Emily Wheeler, students in Acadia’s School of Education, were awarded this year’s annual IODE Nova Scotia Annie G. Murray Memorial Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship started in 1986 after Murray’s death and was awarded to a second-year student at the Nova Scotia Teachers’ College. Since the College closed and Murray attended Acadia University, it was passed by the Provincial Chapter of Nova Scotia IODE (now known as IODE Nova Scotia) that the scholarship be awarded to a student enrolled in the second-year of the Bachelor of Education program at Acadia. Murray was a dedicated teacher, a loyal IODE member and was involved in many community activities. She graduated from Acadia in the early 1900s and was Valedictorian for her graduating class. Pictured at the presentation ceremony in Seminary House on the Acadia campus are (left to right): Charlene Greenfield, Education Officer, IODE Nova Scotia; Lorraine Kent, President, IODE Nova Scotia; scholarship recipients Ashley Beck-Sayer and Emily Wheeler, Class of 2012; Ruth Murray, Secretary, IODE Nova Scotia; and Dr. Ann Vibert, Director of Acadia’s School of Education.
