The Acadia University community came together recently to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Geoffrey D. Kott Athlete-Scholar Awards, a pillar of support for student-athletes striving for excellence in sports and academics. With renewed support, the awards, initiated by Geoff Kott ('96), an alum and former Axemen Basketball standout, are now set to continue its legacy.

Kott's passion for education and desire to give back to the institution that shaped him are evident in his commitment to the award. "It is humbling to see how the Kott Awards have played a role in the lives of student-athletes at Acadia over the last ten years," Kott said. "My experiences at Acadia were transformational, and it's deeply rewarding to help pave the way for future generations. These awards are about levelling the playing field and offering a helping hand to those who will one day lead our communities."

Business grads Kelsea Vessey ('21) and Corey Cadeau (‘17) spoke highly of how the Geoffrey D. Kott Athlete-Scholar Awards allowed them to excel without the looming concern of financial hardship.  

"The Kott Award was a game-changer for me," said Cadeau, who played varsity soccer. "It let me focus on my studies and athletics, and I'm incredibly thankful for that. It's inspired me to give back and continue this legacy of support as a future donor."  

Vessey echoed her appreciation. “The Kott Award helped relieve financial pressure and allowed me to focus on my academic pursuits, as well as the varsity swim team and engage in co-curricular activities on campus.” 

Acadia’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Jeff Hennessy, underscored the value of the Kott Award and the integral part alumni play in helping students. "Our student-athletes are exceptional, and they deserve every bit of encouragement we can provide," he commented. "Geoff's generous commitment ensures that this important support will only grow stronger with time, and it sets an outstanding example of what it means to be a part of the Acadia family.” 

Athletics Director Brian Finniss reflected on the importance of alumni support for student-athletes. "Alumni giving back is a powerful statement of the lifelong bonds formed here at Acadia," he remarked. "It's significant not just for the financial assistance it provides but also for the message it sends to our students as they pursue excellence in academics and in sports."
