Sabbatical Showcase - Dr. Alex Marland

October 31, 2025 (2:00 pm - 3:00 pm)

Location: KC Irving Environmental Sciences Centre Auditorium at Acadia University

Dr. Alex Marland, Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership presents "Why are Canadian Politicians So Loyal to their Parties?"

Why do Canadian politicians so often place party above all else? Why do parliamentarians follow leaders’ directions and messaging while so few rebel? Join us for a lively conversation with the author of the new book, No I in Team: Party Loyalty in Canadian Politics, the first in-depth study of this phenomenon in federal and provincial politics, showing how rules, pressures, social dynamics, and digital technology reinforce partisan loyalty over independent judgment. Drawing on interviews with politicians and staff plus four decades of media analysis, No I in Team raises urgent questions about whether Canadian democracy is being weakened by ever-tighter partisan control.

The Sabbatical Showcase is a monthly opportunity for faculty to share their research with campus and community. This program is a partnership with the Adult Lifelong Learning (ALL) group.
