Curator Talk & Catalogue Launch: Beyond La Llorona
December 4, 2024 (2:00 pm)
Location: Acadia University Art Gallery
The exhibition focuses on the representation of lived experiences of women in contemporary Oaxacan society: from the labourers in the markets often seen as invisible, to calls to action for women’s rights, and in the creation of spaces in the city for the production and creation of art by women printmakers.
Over 40 works on paper selected from four leading studios (Amarte, Hoja Santa, La Productora Gráfica del Bosque, Subterráneos) reflect on the possibilities of art as a tool for social resistance: both in their subject matter, but also in the physical spaces they have created in the city: where the very act of creation is a political act in and of itself. The exhibition is the first large scale print exhibition of Mexican artists to be featured in the art gallery.
