International Archaeology Day
October 17, 2026 (11:00 am - 2:00 pm)
Location: Beveridge Arts Centre & Vaughan Memorial Library
The Acadia History & Classics Department will be hosting a showcase of the many archaeology-related projects that are happening this fall on campus! This event is completely free and intended for all community members - students, faculty, and the general public.
Interested in how archaeologists dig up the past? Come see the ongoing excavation of Acadia's 1st College Hall, which burned down in 1877 and is being uncovered by a class of Acadia students. Or, you can head down to the Centre for Critical Play to explore an archaeological site using virtual reality!
Are you more interested in how archaeologists would study "ancient" tech like CDs or floppy disks? Come talk to archivist Ciaran Purdome for a peek at how old recordings and files are moved to new formats before they’re gone for good.
Maybe you'd like to hear about the cool artifacts that are held in Acadia's archives? Come see Dr. Nick Kraus, curator at the British Museum, and Acadia’s own Professor Scott Coleman. Together they will provide information about 5000-year-old artifacts, coin collections, neolithic stone tools, and more! This will be the first time these ancient objects will be publicly visible. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to come see them yourself!
Do you have kids who just want to get their hands on history and learn by doing? The Acadia Art Gallery will be hosting activities for the whole family to try! Options include a “make your own cuneiform tablet” activity, writing your name in ancient Greek and in Middle Egyptian (hieroglyphics!), 3D printed replicas of historical artifacts (like cylinder seals that kids can test themselves), and a demo of how 3D models are made. This event is for all ages, so bring the whole family for some fun with 3D artifacts and crafts!
Come to either entrance of the Beveridge Arts Centre, and student volunteers will lead you to these incredible showcases.
