Join Drs. Natasha Kenny (Executive Director, Taylor Institute, University of Calgary) and Ann Braithwaite (Professor, Diversity and Social Justice Studies, UPEI, and 3M National Teaching Fellow) as they engage participants in a conversation about teaching in difficult times, and the importance of valuing expertise in teaching and student learning.

Sparked by the recent outpouring of articles (mostly for, with a few against)  about teaching and learning centers, we find ourselves focusing on the larger context within which these conversations are happening. Many of us know that teaching, as well as the infrastructure and programming around teaching, is under duress across the postsecondary sector. In a larger context framed by growing anti-intellectualism and anti-expertise sentiments, how do those of us dedicated to teaching and learning hold on to hope and collective purpose, to bring others along with us?

Teaching is, at its core, an equity issue. Who we teach and how we teach matters as much as what we teach. Drawing on our respective institutional contexts and experiences, we will engage the community in a conversation about the importance of recognizing teaching expertise as central to the postsecondary identity and mission. In difficult times, hope, resilience, and collective purpose emerge not despite our commitment to teaching and learning, but through it. Through this conversation, we will work with participants to make this commitment visible.
