Name and Gender Marker Change Legal Clinic for Trans, Non-Binary and Two Spirit Acadia Students

March 14, 2025 (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)

This legal clinic is being postponed until Fall 2025. Stay tuned for details for the rescheduled event, which will be open to community members as well as students. Are you ready to take the first step in changing your legal name or gender marker? Dalhousie Legal Aid will be visiting the SUB to provide assistance in filling out forms needed to update your legal name and gender marker, as well as legally witness signatures on March 14th in the Michener Lounge.

Walk-ins will be accepted but pre-registration is preferred. Pre-register here.

In Nova Scotia, you can have your gender marker updated to F, M, or X, or you can have your ID document updated to not reflect any gender marker.

Eligibility:
-16 years and older
-Born in Nova Scotia OR lived in NS for at least 3 months immediately before applying to change your name/gender indicator
-Able to provide: Most recent birth certificate (if born in Canada) OR Immigration documents (if born outside of Canada)

Cost (note: payment is due when forms are submitted, not at this clinic):
Gender marker change: Your first update is free. Any further amendments cost $24.95.
Name change: $165.70

Process:
Book a time slot via the link in our bio or drop-in between 1pm and 3:50pm.
Bring your Canadian birth certificate or immigration documents with you.
A lawyer will help you fill out forms and legally witness signatures.
If you are applying to change your name, you also need to get your fingerprints taken by RCMP or Commissionaires at a separate time.

Please note: It takes 3-5 months for Vital Statistics to process these forms and issue updated documents.
