Robyn Maynard Research Talk: "Abolition and Fascism"
February 6, 2026 (11:30 am - 1:00 pm)
Location: KC Irving Environmental Sciences Centre Boardroom
This talk takes up Black radical critiques that link fascism to carcerality in order to reflect on the rise of authoritarian, right wing governance across Canada, the United States, and the “West” more broadly.
Reflecting on today’s increasing use of criminalization to “manage” the crises of homelessness, neutralize social movements, and in particular, facilitate mass deportations across the West, the talk reflects on how longer histories of policing Black life—and Black abolitionist struggles for liberation—can help to make sense of the multiple crises of the present and inform the creation of more liberatory futures.
