MATH 1013 COINT: Calculus 1

Limits, tangent lines and derivatives, exponential, logarithmic and inverse functions. Application of the derivative to rates, extrema, curve sketching, indeterminate forms. Calculus is a very broad subject, and many different focuses for an introductory calculus course are possible. This course will view calculus as the study of functions and their properties.

Our three main learning objectives for the course are:

Determine analytic and geometric properties of a function including limits, continuity, derivative as slope of tangent line/local linearity, and derivative as rate of change
Choose and apply appropriate computational tools and theorems to solve mathematical and applied problems
Interpret properties of functions in order to answer questions about applications modeled by the function

In this course, we will also focus on developing three ancillary skills that will help you in applying your calculus knowledge beyond this course:

Logical reasoning: you will continue to develop your understanding of the structure of mathematical definitions and theorems, your ability to apply a theorem or check that something meets a definition, and your skills in working with counterexamples.
Technical communication: you will practice written communication to further develop your skills in writing or presenting solutions to calculus problems.
Mathematical computing: you will strengthen and improve your knowledge and skill in using Desmos for a variety of graphing tasks applicable to solving calculus problems and communicating your work.

Instructor: Caroline Cochran
Prerequisites: 60% or better in NS Precalculus 12 (or equivalent), or C- or better in Math 1003, or C- or better in Math 1613. Satisfactory performance on a diagnostic test is additionally required.
Antirequisites: Credit can be obtained for only one of MATH 1013 or MATH 1613: however, students who have taken MATH 1613 and subsequently take MATH 1013 may use MATH 1613 as a science elective.
